As parents, when we think of great leaders, we don’t have to consult history books, we can list many from our own lifetime. But, American kids under 12 years old have seen poor examples “winning” twice over. Here’s a little exercise from our latest issue to get readers thinking about what it means to be a good leader.

DRAW A LEADER:
Good leaders come in all shapes, sizes, and colors. Follow the steps below to sketch out what one looks like to you and then answer the prompts that go with each.

1. DRAW TWO EYES. Good for [check all that apply]:
🔲 Reading interesting books
🔲 Recognizing talent in others
🔲 Staring blankly at the TV

2. DRAW TWO EARS. Used to hear:
🔲 New ideas
🔲 Constructive criticism
🔲 How great you—and only you—are

3. ADD A NOSE. Excellent at:
🔲 Sniffing out new opportunities
🔲 Poking it where it doesn’t belong

4. ADD A MOUTH. Helpful for:
🔲 Inspiring people
🔲 Thanking people
🔲 Calling people mean names

5. PILE ON SOME HAIR.
This one’s totally irrelevant. It’s just fun to draw hair!

6. NOW, TELL US MORE ABOUT THIS LEADER. (CIRCLE ALL THAT APPLY.)
Has a kind heart
Takes responsibility
Blames others
Lifts people up
Bullies people
Is fair
Is greedy
Works hard

Which leaders inspire you most? What kind of leader do you want to be?

You may have heard that Dr. Carla Hayden, the first woman & first African American to be “America’s Librarian,” was just unceremoniously fired by the Tr*mp administration.

But, you might not have heard how wonderful Dr. Hayden is, how much she truly loves libraries. Dr. Hayden took a moment in 2020 to share some advice with our young readers. From our story in Kazoo 18:

>>>Growing up, Carla always loved to read. “Mysteries were my favorite!” she said.

She became a librarian by accident. After college, between job interviews, she’d hang out at her favorite place: The Chicago Public Library. It turns out they were hiring, too.

Carla had found her calling. “Libraries are like treasure chests, full of ideas, and, as a librarian, it’s my job to show you what’s inside,” she said.

In 2016, President Obama tapped her to become the Librarian of Congress. In our nation’s history, no woman, or person of color, ever held the job before her!

As the leader who oversees a collection of more than 170 million books and more, she had a message for our young readers:

“Dear Noisemakers, Your story is important. It belongs on these shelves just as much as any other story here, so tell it. Write it, draw it, sing it, rap it, photograph it. Do it any way you want. Because every day, you are making history.”

The Library of Congress is the largest library on Earth. It includes more than 73 million manuscripts, including everything from Thomas Jefferson’s rough draft of the Declaration of Independence to Rosa Park’s diaries, personal letters, & even her recipe for pancakes.

It is a research library & books are used only on the premises by members of the public who are over 16 years old, for research purposes.

When asked why Dr. Hayden was fired Tr*mp’s Press Secretary said, “There were quite concerning things that she had done in the pursuit of DEI & putting inappropriate books in the library for children.”

Today they announced Todd Blanche, Tr*mp’s Criminal Defense attorney, would take the position. He has no experience working in libraries.

Dr. Hayden, YOU made history & will always inspire us.

Dear Noisemakers: You can have more than five pencils. Love, your pals at Kazoo 💕

We’ve been hearing mostly about how the Tr*mp economy will affect “little girls.” Not Xboxes & car parts but only girls toys, as if dolls & pencils are the biggest US imports. And we’re being told that little girls will just have to make do with fewer dolls (imagination) and fewer pencils (creativity).

But whatever disastrous economic decisions they make, we have to even more fiercely protect our readers’ rights to creative thought and play. And we will. Please join us.
