Specializing in Syrian Jewish and Sephardic families, Sephardic Genealogical Journeys can build your genealogy using family information and documents as a starting point, and then research and collect information from other sources. A member of the JewishGen Board of Governors, Sarina Roffé has an extensive history and passion for Sephardic genealogy. Born into Brooklyn’s Syrian community, Sarina realized the importance of chronicling her family’s history after the death of her grandparents. With 52 first cousins, it became easy to lose track of who was related to whom. Documenting the family history gave the family a written record that could be passed down through the generations. As the designated family historian, she soon became frustrated that records were not easily available from Syria, then part of the Ottoman Empire, where her family originated. During the past three decades, Sarina founded the Sephardic Heritage Project and completed genealogies for the following community families: Missry, Salem, Roffé, Labaton, Hedaya, Seruya, Beda, and Kassin. In 2002, Sarina completed Branching Out, the genealogy of Chief Rabbi Jacob Kassin z’l, which traced his lineage as a descendant in an unbroken chain of rabbis to 1492. A Distinguished Toastmaster Sarina has presented at numerous conferences including the World Congress of Jewish History and the International Jewish Genealogical Society. She is a frequent contributor to genealogical publications, encyclopedias, journals and magazines. She holds a BA in journalism from the University of Maryland and an MA in Jewish Studies from Touro College.

Mission: With Sephardic Genealogical Journeys, community families will be able to have their family tree researched by professionals who will provide clients with a memorable family tree that will be treasured for generations to come.

Proposal to Change the Portuguese Law

Due to an exponential increase in the number of applicants from 4,000 applicants a year to 21,000 in 2019, an amendment has been introduced to the Portuguese law that would require 2-year residency before approving citizenship. While the amendment to the law has not yet passed, I encourage applicants to get their applications in as quickly as possible.

Dutch Jewish Genealogy Online Seminar - Sunday 3rd May 2020

We are looking forward to our first seminar, to be held on Sunday 3rd May 2020! We shall be discussing Dutch Jewish genealogy, with a focus on the Portuguese-Jewish community of Amsterdam.

A goal of this project is to create a bridge between the different groups interested in Sephardic history: the existing Sephardic congregations; people with Sephardic ancestry researching their past; academics; the Portuguese and Spanish cultural tourism sectors. Both David and Ton are enthusiasts who – for various reasons – did not follow academic careers. Ton has established himself as a world authority on Western Sephardic archives and has found overlooked sources for Sephardic research. David, in researching his own ancestry, has appeared on New Zealand TV in Seville and the BBC in Jaén, but noticed that the cultural sector in those cities largely overlook the Inquisition experience and the subsequent diaspora.

The seminar will be on Sunday at 21:00 Israel time; 20:00 Paris/Amsterdam time; 19:00 London time; 14:00 EST; and 11:00 PT.

www2.census.gov

Starting March 12, US households began getting census letters in the mail. For the first time the US census is digital rather than the pen or pencil to paper we are accustomed to.

We are expected to go to https://my2020census.gov/ to fill out the form using a code sent in the mail. It will be open to the public through July 31. Based on an earlier test run the Census Bureau expect about six out ten households to fill out the form online. For those who have limited Internet access or prefer to stay offline the Bureau will also be collecting census responses over the phone and on paper forms scheduled to arrive in mid-March, and then in early April to every household that has not responded by then. Beginning in mid-May, it's planning to send workers equipped with an iPhone app to collect and deliver information about people in households that have not self-responded to the census.

To see the questions on the 2020 US census go to: https://tinyurl.com/yxlmq2dh
Original url:
https://www2.census.gov/programs-surveys/decennial/2020/technical-documentation/questionnaires-and-instructions/questionnaires/2020-informational-questionnaire.pdf
For more information on the questions go to:
https://2020census.gov/en/about-questions.html

There is no citizenship question on the 2020 Census despite attempts by the Administration to include it which was stopped by the US Supreme Court last year.

The webform and call centers are available in 13 languages.

It is important to complete the form. The results of the count are used to redraw voting districts and redistribute Congressional seats, Electoral votes and an estimate $1.5 trillion a year in federal spending among the states.

The bureau has until the end of December to start releasing the results of the 2020 census, beginning with the latest state population counts.

Your personal information is secure according to the Bureau as in dry runs they have not identified any census data that have been compromised. As a precaution for 2020, the bureau is blocking IP addresses based outside of the U.S. from accessing the online form. The data will be encrypted, and both the field staff and office staff who access it will only be able to log into the system using two-factor authentication.

To learn a bit more about the background and technology used to find the households and what the census takers will use to as they take to the street to find the non-responders see: https://www.wired.com/story/us-census-2020-goes-digital/

To try to prevent a government website “blowout” the bureau is trying to pace web traffic by staggering the mailing of letters that direct most U.S. households to https://my2020census.gov/ . While the Bureau is expecting about 120,000 users on the census website at the same time, the bureau has been trying to build a system at least five times as strong to handle 600,000 concurrent users. A Government Accountability Office (GAO) report says it recently discovered the IT system that the bureau was planning to rely on as its primary system for collecting online responses could not handle 600,000 concurrent users "without experiencing performance issues,--basically a slow down in performance”. The bureau switched to an in-house system that was intended to be the backup. They also ordered backup printed forms just in case.

As genealogists we should also copy-scan in the form or take a photoshot for our families’ next generations of family historians. Remember, the census will not be released for 72 years so the 2020 census won’t be released until 2092. (With the 72 embargo the 1950 US census will be released April 1, 2022).

Sephardic Jews Are Fighting for Their History to be Represented | Jewish Journal

The University of California-Los Angeles (UCLA) Alan D. Leve Center for Jewish Studies has produced an online exhibit, 100 Years of Sephardic Los Angeles http://www.sephardiclosangeles.org/. For purposes of this exhibit the term Sephardic includes communities not always associated with the term. It includes histories of Jews from across the Mediterranean an Middle east form Iraq to North American and Ottoman Anatolia and Balkans. The site has photographs, old videos and recordings. While the title says its 100 years the exhibit include information on Solomon Nunes Carvalho born in South Carolina in 1815 and traveled with famed photographer Jahn C. Fremont in 1854 to the west.

There are 25 segments on the website including Sarajevo to the City of Angels, Judeo-Spanish Romanos in Los Angeles, Iranian Jewish Los Angeles, Reading Ladino in Los Angeles, Cooking the Sephardic Way, Breaking Ground in the 1930s, The Bootblacks of Wall Street, From Kavala to California, Little Jewish Morocco, the Mexican Mahjar of the Borderlands and more.

The (Los Angeles) Jewish Journal has an article on the exhibit which may be accessed at:
https://jewishjournal.com/news/los_angeles/community/311177/100-years-of-sephardic-life-in-l-a/

If you enjoy history whether you have Sephardic roots or not, the exhibit gives a flavor of Los Angeles and its people.

Portugal declares official commemoration day for inquisition of Jews - European Jewish Congress

The Portuguese Parliament has approved a law to officially commemorate the Inquisition of the Jews to be March 31 of each year. The March 31 date was selected as the Day of Remembrance for the Victims of the Inquisition as that was the date in 1821 that the Inquisition in Portugal was officially disbanded. The expulsion of Jews from Portugal was in 1497 with subsequent massacres of the Jews from the Inquisition which began in 1536. The Inquisition operated in Portugal from 1546, during the reign of King João III, until March 31, 1821.

So I am partway through the Portuguese Citizenship Project - anyone made it all the way through the process and have words of wisdom or willing to chat offline? thx
+++ SHABBAT
Hi everyone! I am wondering if anyone has gone through the process for Sephardic Jews of Spanish heritage to receive citizenship? My grandparents and GGP are Sephardic Jews who lived in Spain before immigrating to Mexico. While I will go a synagogue on special occasions and for family weddings, I am not very religious - so obtaining a letter from a rabbi would feel strange for me, as I don’t know the ones at the synagogues I frequent very well. Any advice from folks who have gone about this process?

Sephardic Citizenship Interviews: Dear all: I’m a cultural anthropologist and historian writing my dissertation on Spain’s Sephardic citizenship law. I have been interviewing potential applicants (both those who plan to apply and those who do not as well as those who have been accepted and those who have been rejected). I am still looking to interview more potential or current non-American applicants (especially from Venezuela, Turkey, Israel, and Argentina). Please share widely with anyone you think might be interested in a short (15-30 minute) interview. I can be reached at [email protected]. Thank you! More information on me and my research can be found here: https://newschool.academia.edu/CamMcDonald.
I received this note from a professor at the college where our institute is located. Does anyone have any info on this family? "I was recently in Zakynthos (A Greek island), they have an amazing story – the entire Christian population mobilized itself to save the Jewish population during the holocaust. I visited the Jewish Cemetery there and found a note there asking for information about an Isaac Samuel Gani and his family. He was born in Zakynthos the 8th of August 1858 and left his island for Egypt around 1875-1880. I know this is a long-shot, but would you perhaps have any information about this person or name?" Thanks! Adina
