Brooklyn Heights Blog

Brooklyn Heights Blog Dispatches From America's First Suburb The Brooklyn Heights Blog was founded by music and radio industry executive, John Loscalzo—a.k.a Homer Fink.

Sadly, John passed away in 2015. Of John, a friend and long-time contributor Heather Quinlan said, "he brought a reporter’s integrity to the site along with a devilish wit and insatiable curiosity about both the beautiful and the quirky of Brooklyn Heights." It is in this spirit under the helm of Editor, Claude Scales, that we continue to report on the news and events both big and small that impact our corner of Brooklyn. Thanks for reading.

There’s bubbling brook on Henry Street between Clark and Love Lane. Some of our regular readers have called 311. Correspondent SongBirdNYC was on the scene when a DEP truck arrived this morning to clear the clogged storm drain on the corner of Henry and Clark.

SongBirdNYC showed the worker the source of the flooding. The man then called their office to ensure the problem had been flagged by the appropriate repair teams. The city has 3 days to fix the problem. We should expect Henry Street to be dug up within the next few days.

Good morning Brooklyn Heights! A quick re-post to get the word out about the March for Racial Injustice, happening TODAY! "Protesters will begin gathering in Brooklyn at 12:30 p.m. Sunday at the Jay Street Plaza near Jay and High streets. The March for Racial Injustice will begin at 3 p.m."

NEW CHINESE CLASS IN BROOKLYN : Little Mandarin Academy Hi there! I want to share with you Little Mandarin Academy - the new fun and interactive Chinese class for kids in Brooklyn. A Little About Us At Little Mandarin Academy, we believe starting young is the key to becoming truly culturally diverse and multilingual. As the world becomes increasingly globalized and China having an important position as an economic powerhouse, it is inevitable that knowing Chinese will become not only a valuable but essential asset for your children’s success in the competitive future. Our model is to incorporate immersive activities designed to stimulate and support each learning style, such as auditory, kinaesthetic and visual. Our approach encourages questions, inquiries and generates curiosity not only for the Chinese language but the Chinese culture as well. We believe it is through the understanding of both the culture and language that we can truly bridge the gap between the East and the West. Through a play-based curriculum, we spark curiosity with engaging materials and activities. Our ultimate goal is to make learning fun and interesting for children, as we believe this is the best way to keep students engaged and intrigued throughout their journey of learning Chinese. So what makes us different? 1) Instructors have background in both East and West, making it easy and effortless to connect and bond with students 2) Play-based curriculum to evoke continuing curiosity and interest about the Chinese language and culture as they grow up 3) Offering options including private lessons and on-demand playgroups at the location of parents' preference as well as online classes that give flexibility in regards to time, location and size of classes 4) We incorporate culturally themed course materials into our classes. This helps to further bridge not only the language but also the cultural gap for your child in the future Social Media Accounts: Instagram: Little_Mandarin_Academy Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/LittleMandarinAcademy We look forward to hearing from you and please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions!
I want to tell parents that I'm offering summer tutoring online for students who need extra help academically. I am a certified special education teacher from grades 1 to 6. I've been working for the board of education since 2005. I also have been a private tutor for 11 years. If you need any references I can provide that for you as well. I teach all subjects too. If anyone is interested or knows anyone who is feel free to send me a private message to discuss further details thank you. I would love the opportunity to help your child succeed.
FURMAN STREET NOISE, PART II: Well, there is no doubt about the source of the ongoing noise assault in the North Heights. It originates from the Cranberry Street Tube FAN PLANT on Furman Street. Here is a (mercifully) short video of what is going on there right now--12:09 p.m., Monday, May 31, 2021:
THE NOISE FROM FURMAN STREET: From time to time a very loud 'industrial strength' noise originates from, I believe, an MTA ventilation or other facility on Furman Street, probably between Cranberry and Pineapple Streets (if they still went down to the river). The noise registers at around 81 decibels inside our apartment when it is going full tilt, which seems to be on most weekends. Inspectors from DEP have been here and documented the noise and mentioned that they have received complaints from folks on Columbia Heights and Furman Street itself. I am interested in having this noise abated, mitigated or otherwise removed from our auditory landscape. In short, it is maddening. I would be interested in communicating with other folks in the North Heights who are also assaulted by this periodic noise. If you are impacted by this and want to help make this noise go away, please contact me by FB Messenger. I can bring you up to date on what has ben done so far and, together, we can map out a plan to get the MTA to bring its facilities into compliance with the City's noise pollution requirements. Posted below is a brief video with audio, taken last weekend. Thank You.

Please help us find my boyfriends grandmother. She is 76 with dementia. SHE DOES NOT SPEAK, she has been missing since last Sunday the 9th. SHE HASNT HAD HER MEDICATION SINCE THE 8th. SHE WAS LAST SEEN WITH BLACK PANTS ON BLACK COAT AND BLACK SHOES. IMPORTANT: the weather has been extremely cold and than back up to a comfortable temp. So we wouldn’t be sure if she still has her hoodie up this way or would it be down and giving you a view of the brown hat that she has underneath the coat hoodie. There is also a chance she doesn’t have the hat or hoodie on making it important to please stare at each picture below to see the different ways she can be either walking around or sitting down somewhere perhaps even blending in as a homeless woman. We beg you if you see something to say something! READ FLYER BELOW
