Submissions are open for The North Shorts Short Documentary Grant & Residency, a grant and residency for six filmmakers in the American Northeast working on documentary shorts. Points North Institute, IF/Then Shorts, ScreeningRoom, LEF Foundation and Jigsaw Productions have come together to support this short documentary initiative and invite diverse stories and storytellers from the American Northeast to apply for a grant and residency to take cinematic short documentary films from the edit to distribution. Six selected film teams will receive a $5,000 post-production grant and participate in a month-long online rough cut lab. After the lab, the films will be shown at an invitation-only rough cut screening as a part of the 2020 Camden International Film Festival. Following the lab and festival, filmmakers will receive two months of distribution consultation to help get their film out into the world. Submissions close August 2nd at 11:59pm. Link below!

Meet Ingrid Serban, our Filmmaker In Focus. Ingrid is a Transylvania-born filmmaker and musician who is currently working on a feature doc about, none other than, vampires. In Strigoi she returns to Transylvania to collect supernatural stories and traditional Romanian folk songs from her village. She even visits Dracula's castle. She managed to get key footage before the borders closed so she has plenty of material to work on while self-isolating. "My editor managed to get home to her family in Belgium so we'll be working remotely. I remind myself to be grateful for everything I have and to do the work to finish this movie!” Ingrid sent us a video showing where she’s been working the last few weeks - watch it below.

Meet Marcia Rock, our Filmmaker In Focus. Marcia is the director of News and Documentary at NYU Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute and though she's not teaching this semester, she believes it's important to keep connected with her students during this time. She's making the best of the situation not only by keeping her students engaged and connected, but also by continuing working on her own projects. Only ONE day left to apply to our $5000 grant for a short investigative documentary film with The Intercept and Double Exposure Investigative Film Festival and Symposium! Submissions close January 10th at 8:59PM PST. The grant includes $5,000 towards the completion of a short film, mentoring, the use of a Canon C300 Mark I kit for 10 days (if in the US), the potential for publication on The Intercept and the potential for screening at 2019.
