Food Culturist Nicole A. Taylor is a food writer based in Brooklyn, New York. She has written for Wine Enthusiast, Food & Wine, Esquire, and the New York Times.

Taylor is the author of The Up South Cookbook and recipes in The Last O.G. Cookbook (a TBS sitcom starring Tracy Morgan). Nicole serves on the boards of The Edna Lewis Foundation and EATT (Equity At The Table).

For @nytcooking, I wrote about #Kwanzaa. A time of feasting and candle-lighting are a soft pillow to collapse into after the long-haul duties of supporting Black-owned restaurants, organizing social justice direct actions, nurturing elders and dancing through pain and triumph. Brunch, a major part of homecoming at historically Black colleges and universities, is still on for this year, even if it has to be virtual. "Waffles are almost always on the menu,” Nicole Taylor writes in her recipes for these cornmeal waffles. “These crispy, savory cornmeal waffles are a weekend must-make and fancier than a pancake stack.”

This year, many homecoming festivities have been canceled because of the pandemic. But the energy of game day never dissipates. Memories of tailgating sustain many graduates of HBCUs, and brunch, which has become the new cornerstone of homecoming celebrations, will be a remote affair for 2020.
