Hafiz collectors edition available at redhookeditions.com
Hafiz is already a deeply conceptual photo book. It's about young girls memorizing the Qur’an, exploring ideas of faith, femininity, discipline, and freedom.
Holding a gold-embossed, black, limited-edition Hafiz can feel that mirrors the duality of the images.
For me the special black-and-gold edition of Hafiz transforms intimate portraits of Qur’an schools into a tactile object. While the regular pink editions evoke softness and reflection, the black version adopts a bold, punk-inspired design that merges the sacred with the subversive. The gold recalls Qur'anic illumination, divine beauty and reverence; the black signaling rebellion and individuality. Both challenge stereotypical representations of Muslim women.
Black special edition turns the same content into a more radical visual dialogue between tradition and rebellion. Kind of a physical manifestation of the inner tension and beauty.
l wanted the collectors to feel that touching something sacred and subversive at one experience.
