Mayor Zohran Mamdani planted an olive tree at Gracie Mansion on Wednesday night with Palestinian families from Gaza, after hosting them for dinner at the mayor's official residence. "Last night I planted an olive tree at Gracie Mansion with Palestinian families from Gaza. May peace be our future," he wrote Thursday.

Mamdani posted the video the day Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called him "the antisemitic mayor of New York" in a speech to the U.N. General Assembly. A few blocks away, 104 people were arrested at a sit-in protesting Netanyahu's visit, among them Council Members Jennifer Gutiérrez and Chi Ossé and Assembly Member Emily Gallagher.

"Free Palestine. Netanyahu burn in hell," Council Member Chi Ossé wrote with a photo of himself in handcuffs after he was arrested Thursday at a Jewish Voice for Peace sit-in near the United Nations during Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's visit to the General Assembly.

Ossé was one of 104 people arrested, according to a statement from the office of Council Member Jennifer Gutiérrez. Gutiérrez and Assembly Member Emily Gallagher were also arrested, the office said. Protesters demanded an end to U.S. arms to Israel and the genocide in Gaza.

"Free Palestine. Netanyahu burn in hell," Council Member Chi Ossé (Chi Ossé ) wrote with a photo of himself in handcuffs after he was arrested Thursday at a Jewish Voice for Peace sit-in on First Avenue near the United Nations, during Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's visit to the General Assembly.

Ossé, who represents Bedford-Stuyvesant and Crown Heights, was one of 104 people arrested, according to a statement from the office of Council Member Jennifer Gutiérrez (Jennifer Gutiérrez ). Gutiérrez, who represents parts of Williamsburg, Bushwick and Ridgewood, and Assembly Member Emily Gallagher(Emily Gallagher ), who represents Greenpoint and Williamsburg, were also arrested, the office said. Protesters demanded an end to U.S. arms to Israel and the genocide in Gaza.

Gutiérrez posted video from the sit-in showing NYPD officers leading protesters away. "We are safe and out of jail," she posted after her release.

Bushwick Yacht Club opens a one-week presale of a four-piece charity clothing collection Thursday, September 24, at 11 a.m., and 100 percent of the profits go to One Love Community Fridge, a group that runs free community fridges in Brooklyn.

The collection, made with Bushwick-based grocer Farm to People and Brooklyn-based artist Fefi Castedo, is a T-shirt ($42), a long-sleeve tee ($55), a hoodie ($90) and a tote bag ($40), sold only through the brand's website.

“This collab, much like the brand, is about more than a T-shirt,” said Aaron Nessel, founder of Bushwick Yacht Club.

The L train will not run between Lorimer Street in Brooklyn and Eighth Avenue in Manhattan on two October weekends: from Friday, October 2, at 11:15 p.m. to Monday, October 5, at 5 a.m., and again October 9 to 12 on the same hours.

In Brooklyn, the L runs every eight minutes between Canarsie-Rockaway Parkway and Lorimer Street. Riders crossing to Manhattan are directed to the A or J with a transfer at Broadway Junction, and free shuttle buses stop at Bedford Avenue, Lorimer Street/Metropolitan Avenue, Hewes Street and Marcy Avenue.

Carnaval NYC brings more than 70 models to Maria Hernandez Park in Bushwick on Sunday, October 18: an outdoor fashion, music and cultural celebration staged by artist and fashion designer Amanda Mehl and her Bushwick-based fashion and arts project, AMEHL.

The day pairs the models with live music, DJs, dancers and a Carnaval-style procession inspired by carnival traditions and cultures from around the world.

“Carnaval NYC takes the idea of a traditional fashion show and turns it into one big public celebration,” Mehl said.

A public workshop tonight at 6 p.m. at the Williamsburg Community Center, 195 Graham Avenue, is the first chance for residents to weigh in on how East Williamsburg spends $20 million from New York State to overhaul its commercial corridors.

Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso announced the East Williamsburg Downtown Revitalization Initiative on September 18, according to a statement from his office. The money comes through the New York State Department of State's Downtown Revitalization Initiative, a state grant program aimed at rebuilding neighborhood downtowns.

The $20 million is not a check the borough president writes on his own. Projects have to come from the community, get vetted, and win selection.

A Local Planning Committee held its first meeting on September 16, and a Call for Projects went out right after. The money has to go toward capital projects that can, in the language of the release, transform the neighborhood's downtown physical environment. Every project has to sit inside the East Williamsburg DRI Strategic Investment Area.

Eligible categories are broad. According to Reynoso's office, that means new development or rehabilitation of existing buildings, public space improvements, signage or branding projects, and facade enhancements, among others.

"This $20 million investment is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for members of the East Williamsburg community to see the neighborhood grow how they want it to," Reynoso said. He said he led the application alongside the Graham Ave BID and the Grand Street BID.

The materials do not state a deadline for the Call for Projects, how much a single project can receive, or which corridors will be prioritized. Tonight's workshop is where the office is pointing people for those specifics.

Tickets are on sale for the 19th annual Bushwick Film Festival, running October 7 to 11 with nearly 100 independent films, series and podcasts at venues across Brooklyn. Passes are listed on the festival's ticket page from $60 to $495.

Opening night is at Lot 45 on Wednesday, October 7 from 6:30 to 11 p.m. The bulk of the screenings run at Williamsburg Cinemas Thursday through Sunday, with award-winner encores on Monday, October 12. The Festival Awards Ceremony is at Lovejoys on Sunday, October 11.

The program counts 17 world premieres, 23 New York premieres, one North American premiere and one U.S. premiere. Appearances across the lineup include Ice-T, Taylor Schilling, Laurie Hernandez, Alec Baldwin, Lucie Arnaz and Lois Smith. Ice-T stars in "Wet Under Blue Sky," a psychological boxing drama getting its U.S. premiere. Hernandez, the Olympic gold-medalist gymnast, makes her short-comedy debut in "Crikey," which world premieres.

New York-set and NYC-produced titles include "Love New York" from Bushwick filmmaker Anthony DiMieri, whose two-camera shooting style this paper profiled in July for its role in Zohran Mamdani's mayoral campaign videos.

The festival added three new tracks. Animation becomes an official competitive category with a 13-film showcase on Saturday, October 10. A Podcast Program joins the official lineup for the first time. A live Screenplay Reading on Sunday, October 11 moves five selected scripts from page to stage.

Kweighbaye Kotee founded the festival in 2007, starting it in her early 20s while finishing a degree at NYU, and has run it ever since.

Passes come in eight tiers. A Thursday or Friday Pass is $60. The All Festival Pass is $349, and the VIP Festival Pass is $495, adding Opening Night. BFF also dropped discount code BFFSOCIALS for its social media followers, good for 20 percent off.

This year's theme is "Make Time for Your Dreams."
