Happy Friday Eve! It’s time for an #AfternoonApéritif with Wimze 🍸Our Co-Founder & Chief Strategist, Taylor, on ways to prevent employee burnout during this remote work shift:

"Making the transition to fully remote work is really, really hard, especially for creatives whose work is so collaborative. My best advice to prevent employee burnout during the switch is to pay extra attention to communication. Ask your team what they need in terms of brainstorming meetings, touch bases, and venting sessions. Take the general temperature of the team often to decide if you need to pull back on group communication or double down.

Feedback is also hugely important, and tricky to give and receive when working remotely. Be super mindful of the mediums on which you're sending feedback, as sometimes email or Slack aren't ideal if you're sharing subjective feedback on a creative project, or performance feedback. And don't forget about positive reinforcement. Just because your team isn't right next to you doesn't mean you can't give them public acknowledgement for a job well done.

Finally, seek out opportunities to keep your team motivated and future-oriented. Even though the future is uncertain for so many of us, do your best to set short term goals to work toward, and communicate your team's progress toward those goals as often as you can."

There was no better time than quarantine to dabble in the ancient art of podcasting, right? Our co-founder, Taylor, had the pleasure of speaking with Julianna Dahbura of Deco Miami and Souki Co earlier this year on her podcast, The Highlight. They chatted about branding's role in markups in the beauty industry and how COVID-19 has shifted consumer perspective.

A little #AfternoonApéritif anyone? 🍸Some words of wisdom this afternoon from our co-founder & Chief Strategist, Taylor 💭

"Marketers must have their finger on the pulse when it comes to keeping brands relevant. It's our responsibility to educate ourselves, our teams, and our clients as social movements begin to take shape, and to surface opportunities for brands to take part when it makes sense. Brand purpose is just as important right now as it ever was, so my advice to marketers would be to revisit those purpose and mission conversations with the brands you work with in order to pinpoint creative opportunities to contribute to larger social change.

Be mindful of bandwagoning, though. While there are undoubtedly hundreds of noble causes to weave into brand storytelling, your story must stack up to your larger purpose. Social change is a marathon, not a sprint, so keep your messaging strategy focused on long-term impact."

What are your thoughts & experiences around changing with change?

It's no secret that the food & bev industry is struggling. On the bright side, a handful of our faves remind us that, even during difficult times like these, it’s important to practice kindness in any way you can.

Remember the days when we could shake hands, hug and share laugher IRL? 💭Yeah, neither can we. In this “new normal” virtual life, it’s physical human interaction we’re really missing 👭Although that feels far off, we’re happy we have memories to look back on, like this panel we held back in early Feb. The compelling dialogue shared among this group about social responsibility in advertising & the power of messaging is relevant now more than ever.

As leaders, we’re expected to have all the answers (or at least we put enough pressure on ourselves to think we need to). In recent weeks, not only are we learning that we don’t have to have all the answers, but we’re realizing it’s inauthentic to pretend that we do. What we can do though, is allow ourselves to lean in to our vulnerability and curiosity & be authentic—MUCH easier said than done, but so, so worth the sweat.

When it comes to The V Word (that's vulnerability, you guys), our gal Brené Brown is the first person that comes to mind, naturally. From her we’ve learned to ask ourselves, “When things get tough, do we lean in to vulnerability & get curious, or do we self-protect in ways that move us away from our values?” Brene’s book, Dare to Lead: Brave Work, Tough Conversations, Whole Hearts, tells us that having to be a “knower” or always being right is defensiveness & honestly just a big driver of bu****it. Needing to know everything is miserable for both the knowers & everyone around them. It leads to distrust & unproductive conflict.

Instead of trying to be “knowers” right now, we’re striving to grow our inner curious learners. And by doing so and allowing ourselves to be vulnerable, we’re realizing that offering a safe space like this, solutions & a plan for whatever the future may hold is much more valuable than having an answer to exactly how this uncertainty will pan out.

In celebration of #InternationalWomensDay, we asked our team to share their most inspiring female mentors. Here's a little peek at what a few of us had to say:

🟡 "One of the most inspirational women to me is Kathleen Hanna, the lead singer of Bikini Kill. Her music and the riot-grrrl feminism movement that she spearheaded resonated with me as a young girl who went to a lot of male dominated shows. In her music they talk about everything that a girl deals with growing up, and why she was angry about it. It was something I'd never heard before; she had given a voice to all the teenage girls in their bedrooms. She has long fought for women's rights not only in the punk scene but in popular society, and has been candid about her recent struggles with Lyme disease. And she is still a badass, touring and playing shows in her 50's." —Claire, Graphic Designer

🟡 "I've been following Liz Moody's podcast Healthier Together for some time, and every episode leaves me feeling better than the last. I find it incredibly inspiring that Liz created a safe space for her audience not only to listen but to educate themselves on topics relevant to their lives that may be considered too taboo to speak about in a face to face conversation. I've found clarity in ways to accept and navigate through my anxiety by being a member of the community that Liz created; for that, I'll always look up to her." —Courtney, Community Manager

Earlier this month, we sat down with Eva Goicochea of Maude and asked her to share her POV on how brands can make the most impact with their mission."

On Sunday, our Co-Founder Sydney Dalis Stein joined a group of changemakers, innovators and influencers at the Yale University Women's Empowerment Leadership Conference to share stories and advice catered toward female undergrads interested in learning what it takes to make a lasting impact in the world. Hell. YES.

It was such an honor to share the panel with Louise Story of The Wall Street Journal, Christine Dempsey of Hartford Courant, Dee Dee DeBartlo of DeBartlo & Co., and Candi S. Cross of You Talk I Write, all of whom use storytelling as a medium for impact and change.

Our hearts (and brains) are bursting. Here's a little peek at what we learned:
🟡Activism is creating a movement that’s truly inclusive of everyone at the table. — Rebecca Cokley, Founding Director of American Progress Justice Initiative
🟡Leadership doesn’t only apply to the business world. We need to practice “whole life leadership”. — Claudia Chan Wagner, Founder of SHE Summit
🟡We need to reframe our concept of "comments" and instead consider these spaces as ones for "audience conversation". — Louise Story, Chief News Strategist and Chief Product and Technology Officer managing editor at Wall Street Journal

A quick note from our Co-Founder, Sydney:
-
Beyond honored and thrilled to be speaking at Yale University’s 12th Annual Women’s Empowerment Leadership Conference alongside some incredibly inspiring women in media. Entrepreneurial mentorship is a resource I always wish I had taken advantage of in college. In all honesty, college wasn’t really my jam. Partly because I was busy skiing and being an as***le... partly because I struggled in the classic lecture-style forum and often suffered from debilitating low esteem because of it... which further fed my desire to ski and be an as***le. I preferred to educate myself through experience, Youtube, schemes and side projects (“side hustles” weren’t really a thing yet) - which I always seemed to have a handful of going on at all times. This was where I was able to find my voice and my strengths. More importantly, it was where I established confidence. In retrospect, I wish I had felt empowered and confident at the time to lean harder into these very different, yet very useful, skill sets of leadership and entrepreneurship. I wish that skill set had been valued at a higher degree by those evaluating me. We are entering an exciting time where forging an alternative path isn’t just tolerated, but accepted and encouraged - in career, politics, leadership, relationships, gender, marital constitutions and so much more. There is an unbelievable trend towards individuality, introspection and self growth in younger generations and I am all about it. I hope to see this trend follow suit in education. Education is SUCH a personal journey that deserves the space for customization and play. It is programs like the Women’s Empowerment Leadership Conference that are paving the way for new means of self growth, achievement and progress. Mentorship is a major pillar at Wimze and we can’t think of a better way to be advocating and contributing on behalf of this movement."

Our Story

WIMZE Digital has proven success across a variety of industries, proving our flexibility, adaptability, and expert knowledge of our craft. Unlike larger agencies, WIMZE Digital has built an internal structure that can adapt to the intricacies of small and mid-sized businesses. Rather than working from rigid systems, we leave room for collaboration, experimentation, and growth.

The founders of WIMZE Digital recognized the importance of relationship-building to bring awareness to small businesses online, but became frustrated by the lack of organic tools available to help them foster connections. So, they took matters into their own hands and created solutions that satisfy their hunger for authenticity as well as sales.

Ultimately, their goal for WIMZE is to make the digital world a more functional space for small and mid-sized local businesses and their customers to coexist, communicate and thrive. With real-world relationships at the core of business growth, WIMZE empowers small and mid-sized businesses to build their brands online.
