More than 70 years after Brown v. Board of Education, New York City schools remain deeply segregated.

We recorded this special episode of the Miseducation podcast, live at “Separate: NYC Public Schools 72 Years After Brown v. Board,” an event co-hosted by The Bell and the Center for Brooklyn History.

The episode features remarks from NYC Schools Chancellor Kamar Samuels and a conversation between Nikole Hannah-Jones and student reporter Aponi Kafele, marking the 10th anniversary of Hannah-Jones’ New York Times Magazine article, “Choosing a School for My Daughter in a Segregated City.”

It also includes a panel on school integration through the lens of sports, featuring former Park Slope Collegiate High School principal Jill Bloomberg, Small Schools Athletic League founder David Garcia-Rosen and NYC public school graduate and former Miseducation student reporter Renika Jack, moderated by The Bell’s Sabrina DuQuesnay.

Together, these conversations ask: What has changed, what hasn’t and what will it take to build a truly integrated future?

Calling all student journalists! Do you have a story idea? We want to hear from you. The Bell is excited to OPEN PITCHES for Firsthand, our new initiative that will feature student reporting from coast to coast on the most pressing issues in American schools. We’re looking for high school students enrolled in public or charter schools across the country who have ideas for written or multimedia reporting about what’s happening in their schools.

Selected students will receive a monetary stipend, professional mentorship and connection to student journalists around the country. Story pitches received by June 30 will be prioritized and receive a response by mid-July. Learn more about how to pitch your story at bellvoices.org/firsthand
