The expansion of renewable portfolio standards (RPS) has prompted several states to reshape their solar incentive programs. The market for solar renewable energy certificates (SRECs) is driven by solar carve-outs in RPS programs, which require utilities to procure a certain percentage of their electricity from renewable resources.

Amid the growing interest in clean energy, state and federal policy changes to utility power procurement rules under the Public Utility Regulatory Policies Act of 1978 (PURPA) are shaping the portfolios of small renewable power producers. PURPA, which has been a key driver of renewable generation in the U.S., sets requirements for utilities to purchase power from small independent electricity and cogeneration facilities.

Eyes on Reliability - Block Island Performs During Tropical Storm

No news was good news in Rhode Island last week as offshore wind performed as expected during Tropical Storm Henri.

Orsted’s Deepwater Wind is a great project to monitor because as the nations only operating offshore wind farm it can provide insight into what we may encounter in the future.

Leading into the storm three of the five turbines were down for routine maintenance leaving the remaining turbines to go through standard high wind protocol of feathering the blades to reduce drag and then shutting down to wait out the storm.

All accounts indicate smooth operation which is not surprising because Rhode Island has harsher winters than Tropical Storm Henri and the North Sea - where much this technology is deployed - has harsher winters than Rhode Island.
