Skylight Stories that illuminate: Advancing human rights through documentary and digital media. Stories that Illuminate For 30 years Skylight has been committed to producing artistic, challenging and socially relevant independent documentary films & digital media tools on issues of human rights and the quest for justice.

At Skylight we don’t simply tell stories about human rights – we engage people in activism to promote international human rights. (Watch our Skylight 30 Years slideshow to see more) We create media with people; collaborating with community leaders, grassroots organizations, and NGO’s to create media that tells their stories, and strengthens their efforts. We educate with optimism by not only showing the plight, but also the fight. We show a way forward through education and action. We make our films widely available to NGO’s and international educators through Academic Screening Packages and Screening Kits. We increase impact and engagement by creating platforms and new media technologies that makes it easy for people to engage with social issues. Our new media projects include IJCentral, The Toolbox, and Every Memory Matters (see below).

Mission: At Skylight, we use media to inspire, envision and build a better world. Our partners in this work are human rights leaders around the globe who recognize the power of compelling narratives to change how people see themselves and others, moving societies toward greater justice and equality.

The Reckoning

In honor of #InternationalJusticeDay we are offering free streaming of our most popular film THE RECKONING: THE BATTLE FOR THE INTERNATIONAL CRIMINAL COURT through Sunday July 19.

Late in the 20th century, in response to repeated mass atrocities that convulsed the world, more than 120 countries united to form the International Criminal Court (ICC)—the first permanent, independent (treaty based) international criminal court created to prosecute perpetrators (no matter how powerful) of crimes against humanity, war crimes, and genocide. We invite you watch and share this riveting drama about the nascent years of the Court as it struggles change the world and forge a new paradigm for justice.

"When I stand with my community demanding justice for Black lives taken far too soon, I’m also standing for the lives of everyone else that has been affected by this systemic racism. Our struggle is a shared struggle, however no struggle has been as difficult as the Black struggle, therefore when we stand united with the Black Lives movement, we’re standing for every other movement as well, because when the Black Lives movement prospers, all movements prosper."

"The two movements are quite connected, and it has been inspiring to watch them support one another through the years. And they are not mutually exclusive. However, as Black organizers and teachers have taught us, anti-Blackness is specific and is in need of urgent action...In the future, when the time is right, I am excited to see the conversation about police brutality take a close look at Border Patrol and their budget. I am excited to see huge diverse protests outside ICE holding facilities and immigration detention centers. I am excited to see the names and photos of the border’s missing and murdered become familiar to average Americans. Because the border itself was built by white supremacy."

-Robin Reineke, founder of the Colibrí Center for Human Rights and Missing Migrants project, is currently the Assistant Research Social Scientist in Anthropology at the University of Arizona’s Southwest Center in our blog post "HOW THE IMMIGRANT RIGHTS MOVEMENT INTERSECTS WITH THE BLACK LIVES MATTER MOVEMENT"

FROM "BORDERLAND": "For this moment to become a movement, we must not only seize the initiative, but we need to prepare to not let go of it. We must not falter or grow discouraged or become cynical. The chronic disease of racism that has so infected the American system since its inception must be further exposed (yes, further exposed because too many Americans still deny its existence) and decisively rejected. The treatment for the disease of racism will require all of our best tools – protest, truth-telling, electoral politics, strategic litigation, education, and the arts." - Dr. Scott Allen, internal medicine expert and Department of Homeland Security whistleblower in our blog "HOW THE IMMIGRANT RIGHTS MOVEMENT INTERSECTS WITH THE BLACK LIVES MATTER MOVEMENT" Read more here: https://skylight.is/2020/06/juneteenth-how-the-immigrant-rights-movement-intersects-with-the-black-lives-matter-movement/

Skylight and our SolidariLabs networks have been watching with alarm at the growing number of threats to human rights and environmental advocates for years, but particularly since the pandemic has hit.

Personal physical accompaniment by international volunteers has proven historically to be an effective way to protect defenders in the field. Accompaniment can provide increased international visibility and raises the political cost of harming defenders; it expands awareness of defenders’ environmental, political and human rights struggles through diplomatic, government and media channels; it creates ties of moral support and solidarity.

However, due to the global pandemic, physical accompaniment is no longer possible, so we are creating a way to do so virtually. Meet VIVX- our new tool currently in development- to support human rights defenders through trusted, virtual networks.

"The essence of Black Lives Matter is closer to the situation at border communities that many might think. We, communities of color in the country, are subjected to the same systems of oppression and control. The criminalization of black Americans has the same fundamental origins of the system that criminalize parents and children at the border. The militarization of border enforcement agencies is not different, and it has the same purpose, of the process of militarization of local police departments. The hate and racism dramatically experienced by black communities is also felt by poor immigrants color looking for a better life in America."

- Fernando García, Co-founder and Executive Director of Border Network for Human Rights in our recent blog post "How the Immigrant Rights Movement Intersects With the Black Lives Matter Movement"

Women have borne the brunt of lockdown measures around the world. UNICEF has spoken of the ‘shadow pandemic’ of domestic violence, and the number of sexual offenses spiked in the first three weeks of the crisis.

Our Creative Director Pamela Yates joined this recent online panel hosted by Peace Brigades International (UK) which contextualized the rise in gender-based violence and look at how women human rights defenders are responding. Her fellow panelists were Mandira Sharma, Katherine Ronderos, Rachel Mwikali, and Christine Chinkin.

Why is Skylight asking for donations when the organisation is already being funded by wealthy billionaire, George Soros? A corrupt man currently banned from influencing political movements in his home country of Hungary. Is there any mention of this on the Skylight website?
