Skylight Stories that illuminate: Advancing human rights through documentary and digital media.

Stories that Illuminate For 30 years Skylight has been committed to producing artistic, challenging and socially relevant independent documentary films & digital media tools on issues of human rights and the quest for justice. At Skylight we don’t simply tell stories about human rights – we engage people in activism to promote international human rights. (Watch our Skylight 30 Years slideshow to see more) We create media with people; collaborating with community leaders, grassroots organizations, and NGO’s to create media that tells their stories, and strengthens their efforts. We educate with optimism by not only showing the plight, but also the fight. We show a way forward through education and action. We make our films widely available to NGO’s and international educators through Academic Screening Packages and Screening Kits. We increase impact and engagement by creating platforms and new media technologies that makes it easy for people to engage with social issues. Our new media projects include IJCentral, The Toolbox, and Every Memory Matters (see below).

Mission: At Skylight, we use media to inspire, envision and build a better world. Our partners in this work are human rights leaders around the globe who recognize the power of compelling narratives to change how people see themselves and others, moving societies toward greater justice and equality.

DAY 1 OF THE NO MORE DEATHS TRIAL
by Pamela Yates
Four of the No More Deaths/No Más Muertes defendants
went on trial today in Federal Court in Tucson, Arizona charged with trespassing onto designated wilderness and littering. Their real crime? Trying to leave water and food for the most desperate of the poor, the migrants trying to survive the 110 degree heat of the desert crossing into the U.S. From 2000-2017, there have been 2,816 deaths of border crossings, according to the testimony of Pima County Medical Examiner Greg Hess. Thousands more have disappeared, their remains never found nor identified. In his opening statement, Defense attorney Christopher Dupont called southern Arizona, “a veritable cemetery, a land of unmarked graves”. It’s a public health and humanitarian crisis.

The defense’s star witness, John Fife, who started the Sanctuary Movement here in the 1980s, and then later founded No More Deaths, described the moral and spiritual choices that each of us faces today. In epic testimony he compared our times to that of slavery when abolitionists chose to create the underground railroad to help escaping slaves get to the north and to freedom. He also cautioned against the disastrous choice the US government then made in refusing to let Jews fleeing the Holocaust into this country. “That should not happen on our watch, on our border”, he declared.

No More Deaths is a Unitarian Universalist Church Ministry whose mission is to give water, food and medical assistance to migrants in need in the Sonora desert and to save as many lives as they can. That their social justice humanitarian work is being criminalized echoes what’s happening across Latin America and the rest of the world.

As part of our new film series “Borderlands Imaginarium” (former working title “Defiance”) I will be blogging about the trial all week, through the important, precedent setting verdict on Friday which may determine the future of humanitarian aid work in Southern Arizona and across the country. Stay with me.

Who Are We? –– A Call for Solidarity

Who Are We? ––– Let’s think about ways that we can express and act in solidarity with refugees searching for a life with dignity against all the odds.

Watch this short film to see what solidarity looks like, the third in our weekly previews of DEFIANCE, the docuseries on immigration that Skylight is developing. DEFIANCE will call out inhumane immigration policies and address the “Who are we?” question through a lens of solidarity. Our series will celebrate the diverse country that we are, highlight the local heroes that are defying the nefarious actions of our government against migrants, and seek to shift the narrative toward a rational policy on immigration. We hope that you can join us in this effort.

#Colombia Do not miss out on watching the documentary La Negociacion Documental about the peace agreement in Colombia by the great director Margarita Martínez (participant of SolidariLabs Colombia, Skylight Lab)

The ex-president of Colombia Álvaro Uribe asks theaters to censor the film and discourages people from going to see it in theaters in his Twitter account.

The director commented: "It surprises me: all documentaries have a position, one seeks objectivity, but it is absurd to talk about a documentary that nobody has seen," she said, and invited Colombians to see and discuss it "in a democratic way and with a critical sense."

“The thing is, we do not need the poisonous “pilgrims and Indians” narrative. We do not need that illusion of past unity to actually unite people today. Instead, we can focus simply on values that apply to everybody: togetherness, generosity and gratitude. And we can make the day about what everybody wants to talk and think about anyway: the food.”

With something we truly share (and would prefer to talk about anyway)
