Every citizen should be taught how to express themselves through the variety of media forms in our culture. Developing habits and competencies for thinking critically about the videos, films, tweets, posts, and ads we encounter needs to be a part of everyone's education. This is media literacy education. The Media Spot promotes media literacy through the integration of new media production and analysis into existing K-12 curricula. We specialize in bringing student-centered digital media productions to classrooms, afterschool programs, camps and other educational settings, and provide resources for students and educators to tap into the larger media literacy movement through themediaspot.org.

Mission: The Media Spot integrates media literacy education through the facilitation of digital media curriculum enhancement in schools, classrooms, afterschool programs, and other educational settings to promote media literacy as an essential skill set for citizens of all ages.

“The Internet has revived fascist habits of mind.” The #medialiteracy ed movement counters by promoting habitual reflection on our own and others’ biases and desires as readers and makers of media. More K-12 #medialiteracy please!

“"...The Internet breaks the line between the public and private by encouraging us to confuse our private desires with the actual state of affairs....We can now allow our browsers to lead us into a world where everything we would like to believe is true."”

A growing body of evidence shows that college students generally learn less when they use computers or tablets during lectures. That is probably true in workplace meetings, too.

Recognizing bias in news stories is one form of media literacy. Spotting when the news is totally fabricated is something else entirely. How can teachers help students tell fact from media fiction?
