It with great sorrow that we must announce the passing of Joltin’ Joe Sinnott on June 25th at 8:40am at the age of 93. I was a guest on another podcast, talking about a couple of my favorite comic runs of all time with Jimmy Aquino. It's a good time to read a long run, no? I picked ones that could be acquired digitally through the Comixology app, including my own comic, So Buttons.

"Storytelling for Comics" by David Mazzucchelli - FanFaire NYC 2020

Ooh, saving this for later. I always said that when I'm done with my short form auto-bio, that I will steal shamelessly from Asterios Polyp, which I recall having an original idea on almost every page.

Check out this panel from FanFaire NYC 2020, as David Mazzucchelli breaks down storytelling for comics. Best known for his work on the "Daredevil: Born Again...

So… Happy Birthday to Us – Part 2: Carol Channing | So Buttons

My buddy Maria just told me that “Hello Dolly” composer Jerry Herman passed away. That’s a favorite show in my family. My mom used to play the Carol Channing vinyl, my Dad Carl went to school with Streisand in Bklyn, and my aunt Devy has an Al Hirschfeld print with Channing in it, which inspired me to write this strip since we share the same birthday (and I’m doing a series of those). It’ll appear in print in next year’s So Buttons, #11.

So — Anniversaries : Jonathan Baylis’ “So Buttons” #10

Wow! What a nice review of my latest So Buttons comic, #10. Thanks Ryan!

I had the same comic book retailer for over 30 years, Jay Meisel, from the time I moved from The Bronx to Westchester, til the time Port Chester's Empire State Flea Market was closed, and his booth with it. Here's a bit of comic book shop history with me and Anthony Desiato for his podcast.

NEW EPISODE ALERT! 👉 https://apple.co/2TnotAR 🎧

For close to four decades, a curmudgeonly comics vendor slung his wares (which also included movie posters, autographs, and sports memorabilia) at a booth in Port Chester's Empire State Flea Market. Jay Meisel's gruff exterior belied a sweet interior that was quickly apparent to anyone who spent a little time with him. Someone who spent a LOT of time with Jay is today's guest on My Comic Shop History: Jonathan Baylis, creator of So Buttons Comix and a longtime friend & customer of Jay.

Unlike the other shops featured this season, I was never a regular or even semi-regular shopper at Jay's. The times I did go there were simply to visit with Jay or film him in action. As longtime Flat Squirrel followers know, Jay had his own segment in my debut film (My Comic Shop DocumentARy) and went on to star in a spinoff short (By Spoon! The Jay Meisel Story). It was fascinating for me to hear from Jonathan about what it was like to be one of Jay's regulars for decades.

As I say in the episode, Jay's Comics might not occupy the same place in Westchester's comic shop history as the other stores featured this season, but Jay held his ground for a very long time (right up until the market closed, and then some) and made an indelible impression on a lot of folks along the way. It's my hope that his inclusion in this season gives the man his due. Enjoy the episode.

I heard that Joe Sinnott recently announced that he was retiring. Joe inked a cover I had a super minor influence in "editing". I pretty much beg his son every year to sell it to me, ha! Here's the story about that cover. With Steve Saffel

Packing some things for Small Press Expo this weekend. I'm super embarrassed by that banner. I think it makes a great book cover and Dean Haspiel is one of my favorite artists, but at that size, I feel super self-conscious! BIG FAT HEAD!
