CLOG CLOG explores, from multiple viewpoints and through a variety of means, a single subject particularly relevant now.

Online press, blogs, tweets, social media, and other digital forums have drastically increased the speed at which information is distributed, debated, and consumed today. The ceaseless deluge of facts and opinions can make it challenging to assemble a holistic view of any topic. CLOG slows things down. Each issue explores, from multiple viewpoints and through a variety of means, a single subject particularly relevant now.

Mission: CLOG slows things down. Each issue explores, from multiple viewpoints and through a variety of means, a single subject particularly relevant now. Succinctly, on paper, away from the distractions and imperatives of the screen.

How long does THC stay in your system? We tested it by monitoring test subjects for two weeks after they ingested 10mg of an edible. We also spoke with Joe Reilly, President of National Drug Screening, Inc. to learn more about how drugtesting, especially for workplace monitoring, has evolved since the 1980s.

Some of these “Future Scenarios” from CLOG x Artificial Intelligence are feeling pretty accurate and/or desirable right now.

Is artificial super intelligence really inevitable? Can artificial intelligence render actual human labor obsolete—not only in in traditional manufacturing jobs, but also in knowledge industries that until now have been seen as safe from automation? When might artificial intelligence actually surpass human intelligence? And ultimately, will AI lead to human prosperity or, as some argue, human extinction?

Read the full range of responses in CLOG x AI — available via our website.

It is estimated that there are approximately 875 million small arms throughout the world. Gun sales in the United States have surged in recent weeks, especially from first-time buyers, due to fears surrounding Covid-19.

Our GUNS issue explores the key role that guns have had in shaping histories, societies and lives for nearly a thousand years. Incalculable sums of creativity, innovation, and design have been dedicated to this tool which continues to evolve in unexpected ways. Over time, social, political, and economic forces have created a context that often forces us into “pro-gun” and “anti-gun” factions, leaving little room to critically study the gun as an object or consider the complexity of various perspectives.

What will museums look like post-COVID? Institutions like the @guggenheim have long relied on architecture to help build a brand. At the same time, their international constellation of architectural icons has sparked debate about the intrusiveness of architecture in the experience of art, and the ability of a single building to transform an entire city. Read more about it in CLOG : Guggenheim, available on our website.

As our built environment evolves, what is worth keeping? A significant percentage of buildings today—particularly in Western nations—are preserved through imposed guidelines. There are countless reasons why a building or site may warrant preservation but being deemed a landmark is one of the most powerful and complicated.

Landmarking “does not protect great architecture, it protects history,” said Meenakshi Srinivasan, former Chair of New York City’s Landmarks Preservation Commission, which celebrates its 55th anniversary this month.

Yes, we’ve been excited to celebrate the launch of our newest issue on Cannabis, but we never forget about our earlier issues — like the second (!) issue of CLOG, which presented the first comprehensive discussion of Apple’s architecture, from Steve Job’s Eichler-designed childhood home to the evolution of Apple store designs, glass engineering, and the Cupertino headquarters by @fosterandpartners.

We have a limited number of copies still available via clog-online.com

“420: Slang term for the consumption of cannabis, coined by five students at San Rafael High School in 1971: Steve Capper, Dave Reddix, Jeffrey Noel, Larry Schwartz, and Mark Gravich, who would meet at 4:20 P.M. to smoke weed after school activities had ended. “420” became their code word for marijuana.”

CLOG x Cannabis is now available for pre-order!

Marijuana, pot, weed, dope, Mary Jane, grass, ganja. After being criminalized for decades and contributing to surging prison populations, today a wave of legalization is sweeping the United States and the world. Advocates point to medical benefits of marijuana and the legal availability of substances such as alcohol. Opponents often cite pot’s reputation as being a gateway drug, its addictive nature, as well as associated long and short-term mental and behavior problems. The fact remains that research into the drug and its effects has largely been stifled due to its legality. With an estimated 200 million current users worldwide, an industry projected to be worth $31 billion by 2021, an established culture full of symbolism and cultural references, celebrity CBD endorsements and widespread availability, it is time to discuss the full breadth of cannabis.

Issue 17 of CLOG examines the origins of both the medical and recreational use of cannabis, new delivery methods, legalization in the USA and abroad, police enforcement, and its growing acceptance in the wellness industry. The issue also includes an interview with a high-end cannabis distributor, investigates the world of drug testing, and takes an up-close look at a new hemp farm.

As information is distributed and consumed at an increasingly rapid pace, one of the most effective (or at least pervasive) ways to communicate architectural ideas is through renderings. Typically a perspectival image that can be understood without any knowledge of architectural drawing conventions,…
