FOKUS FOKUS uses the arts to connect diverse communities and cultures. We help people realize that art is around us and part of our daily lives.
FOKUS uses the arts to educate, empower and unite communities. We believe the arts enable people to rise above barriers in society by creating new ways of thinking, communicating and interacting. What would your life be like without art? http://www.fokus.org/support

The primary program areas of FOKUS are: arts education: teaching experiences using arts and artists in schools, community centers and other spaces. These programs allow students to develop discipline, leadership and responsibility through the exposure and practice of the arts. arts in the community: short-run experiences that bring art into communities. These include art shows, film screenings, panel discussion and curation of spaces. arts awareness: quarterly publication of INSIGHT magazine which provides access into the minds of artists and expands on what is considered art. INSIGHT is a story board gallery of artists from diverse background and disciplines.

Mission: To educate, empower and unite communities using the arts. We believe the arts enable people to rise above barriers in society by creating new ways of thinking, communicating and interacting.

Light of the Lit Wick by Lynette Yiadom-Boakye

Dance is an art that teaches us that our bodies are revolutionary. Movement is important. Our ancestors' spirits move within us, and we have to move with them, which is towards liberation. ~ Nikiesha

"Art Evokes" is our new series that speaks to the importance of art’s ability to evoke emotions. We present images paired with our thoughts to allow for reflection and discourse between the work and you. The goal is to encourage you to take a deeper look at art beyond the often brief and casual engagement.

Nostalgia highlights what we cherish and sometimes the things that haunt us. We have an opportunity to envision a new path and light the way for our communities. Whilst addressing the past with an eye towards the future while living in the present.

With that in mind, we invite you to share your work with us by submitting it to the Nostalgia Issue of INSIGHT Magazine. Link in our bio for more information or our website – www.fokus.org

INSIGHT Magazine: Nostalgia

Nostalgia makes us reflect upon what we would like to bring into our present moment. Nostalgia highlights what we cherish and sometimes the things that haunt us. It shines light upon the universal truth that only change is constant and invites us to consciously work to bring joy into our lives.

Artists are at the forefront of change as we are the seers, the dreamers who give birth to new ideas each time we photograph, write, paint, draw and send our creations out into the world. We have an opportunity to envision a new path and light the way for our communities.

With that in mind, we invite you to share your work with us by submitting it to the Nostalgia Issue of INSIGHT Magazine. Share your words, art, photography, interviews and more by July 25, 2020. More details in the link.

We are looking to share you art based on the theme of Nostalgia for our next issue of INSIGHT. Read on for the details about how to share your art with more.

This piece of the little boy in a Black Panther jacket represents legacy and responsibility. The Black Panthers created safety and education for the Black community. The boy reflects the future. The boy reflects the idea of "it takes a village..." - Ron

We are starting a new series - "Art Evokes" - where once a week we will post an image with the intent of evoking an emotion in the viewer while adding a personal connection to the piece. Each image will be accompanied by what it meant to the FOKUS who selected the image. The goal is to encourage a deeper and longer look at art beyond the quick 10 seconds or enough time to snap a photo that tends to be alloted to engaging with the work.

The Warrior by Donté Maurice. "We're in a time where having black skin can seem like a threat. But in this, the richness of our skin becomes a medium." ~ Sen

41 Songs
The curation this month is music for taking action - however, whenever, wherever you can and that feels right to you. We hope this month's playlist inspires you to make a change of any size. It is not about how big a change you make but simply that you work to make change. We open with "Lift Every Voice and Sing" and traverse the sonic space with songs and lyrics to help summarize the feelings, the fight, the light and the hope.

The image below is by Dai Sugano for the Mercury News from this past weekend. We have seen a similar photo less than four years ago in Baton Rouge. We have seen a similar photo less than two years ago in Washington D.C. We have seen similar photos during the late 60s as they marched on the Pentagon. We have seen this before.

We have seen this recent news before. Last week, last month, last year, last night, almost 100 years ago in Tulsa. This is the crisis that doesn't want to get wholeheartedly acknowledged. We don't need to remind you that there must be a change. But we must remind you that there must be a change.

Play it straight or on shuffle.

Portrait of a Place: Family Over Everything

“When you’re on the grind trying to make it pop, having a solid support system is essential to manifesting the vision,” says Jon Gray, founder of Ghetto Gastro. “This project is about honoring loved ones whether related by blood or united by purpose. We’re celebrating the diaspora and universal blackness.”

“This film is about family and the stamina it takes to go against the grain and break barriers,” says Jon Gray, founder of Ghetto Gastro, the Bronx-based…
