Series by @stevenbaboun from the recent issue of INSIGHT magazine.
.
“These images are part of a series entitled Bmalké Have You Seen Port-au-Prince? I started making work about my multiculturalism— more specifically my identity as a queer Haitian-Syrian. Through the landscape of family, immigration, and confronting a sense of a fluid identity, I am looking at how my family's journey in the world created my identity. Created me.

My grandparents’ immigrated from Syria to Haiti in the 50s for a better life as they grew up poor in a small village called Bmalké. I am fascinated by their journey across the world— from the Middle East to the Caribbean. They left Syria behind to live in Haiti-- a land that has adoptem them. They have brought to Haiti with them their cuisine, language, and religion. They had children in Haiti— all 5 of them being Haitian.

This body of images is specifically looking at my return to my grandparent’s village of Bmalké, Syria after more than a decade. This was my first time returning after the revolution and civil war started.”

"Family Portrait" by Kudzanai-Violet Hwami

This painting expresses the imperfect and beautiful composition of the Black family. It contrasts the white european family portrait paintings that in various art spaces, which I do not connect to. To be seen as art, do we need images of Black families drench in gold from blood? The austere composition of those "perfect" figures with lavish settings in "high art" paintings is not reality to me.This painting feels real to me. Black families are art and deserve to be seen as such. No perfect setting or blood diamonds needed.~ Nikiesha

Art Evokes is a series celebrating art. Each image will be accompanied by what it meant to the FOKUS who selected the image. The goal wa to encourage a deeper and longer look at art beyond the quick 10 seconds or enough time to snap a photo that tends to be alloted to engaging with the work. Each piece has two stories - the one intended by the artist and the one created by the viewer. Dig deeper.

and with that Art Evokes is wrapped. Thank you for engaging, supporting, sharing and creating!

INSIGHT magazine: Nostalgia Longing for yesterday. Longing for a better tomorrow👀

Artists are at the forefront of change as we are the seers, the dreamers who give birth to new ideas each time we photograph, write, paint, draw and send our creations out into the world. We have an opportunity to envision a new path and light the way for our communities. https://mailchi.mp/083d5ebd3ebc/insightsymbols-3936573

"Bury with my ancestors" by Khari Rahim

I remember seeing this work in person and staring at it for a couple of minutes due to all the layers and images it evoked. The blue water colored background embodies the water graveyard that many ancestors call home while we also use those same pathways to travel. The top most image has an angelic white suit that is now covered in blue while his shadow is gilded over while maintaining the same pose and hand gestures - one hand open one fist clenched. You have two lower figures contemplating the future that they share space in with different ideas and outlooks. ~ Atiba (Atiba)

"Hoop Dreams" by Malik Roberts

This visual collage is one page of the plight and plague the Black society faces. A tome of stories, tales and unresolved issues that seems to be the same story on each page. Malik did a great job of capturing an array of aspirational hopes of elevating in ways that defy projected understandings via the Jordan figure dunking from the free throw line while part of the image is a man in blue everyday jeans and the crowd also has images of people of color. While an albatross holds us back in the same image via the cuffs and chains. All amidst an assortment of terrains and weather. The journey is complex. ~ Atiba (Atiba T. Edwards)

#artevokes will conclude this month. our goals were to highligh how art can and should evoke a reacton in the viewer once we just give pause.

"Yet Another Fight for Remembrance" by Titus Kaphar

This art was created 6 years ago after Michael Brown was killed by Darren Wilson in Ferguson. Yet seems like it could have been made last week, last year, or yesterday. Even the title evokes a sense of frustration as yet again we are put through this cycle of violence, trauma, protest and remembrance as it if was a new notion. The whitewashing of the images of the protesters helps evoke the erasure often seen and done by the media. At some point they feel it is time to move on but the fight has been going on for decades and centuries. ~ Atiba (Atiba T. Edwards)

#artevokes is in the final weeks as this installment will conclude at the end of August.

Join us for a community street mural and art activation on Saturday, July 25th from 9am to 2pm at The Myrtle Ave Plaza (Myrtle Ave and Steuben St). FOKUS is teaming up with @myrtleavebklyn to celebrate and support the diversity of Brooklyn! We will have these stickers for you to complete and also doing chalking.

The Myrtle Avenue Plaza has served over the past years as the stage for community events. We are a neighborhood that welcomes all to express themselves. We would like to invite people to come to fill the BLM street mural with sidewalk chalk while supporting the BLM movement. ⁣
