Ballet Evolved - Enrico Cecchetti 1850-1928

Cecchetti is no joke. As simple as this may seem to people not trained in ballet, the precision and coordination of this simple adagio is incredibly difficult and nuanced. I think I held my breath the whole time he was moving. Also, I friggin' love the Royal Opera House's Youtube channel. #balletlunchbreak #royalballet

Enrico Cecchetti was one of the most influential ballet teachers of all time, coaching greats such as Pavlova and Nijinsky. In 1918, Cecchetti settled in Lon...

Professors Love Answering Cold Emails from White Dudes, "Meh" on Everyone Else

I've lately been considering changing the from line in my work emails to something like, "J. Armand" (my first initial + a modification of one of my middle names, Armando) or just coming up with a variation of this as a "pen name" altogether. I've long-suspected that my cold call emails to art directors and editors get ignored without even being opened, because of how seemingly "difficult" my name appears in a from line. It would seem, there may be some racism at play too. I'm not thrilled about it, but my email campaign analytics, especially the emails-opened rates, usually track way below the self-reported average for the professional subscriptions to which I belong. (This is, admittedly, rather depressing, especially in academia.)

From NPR's transcript of a Morning Edition story: Group of researchers ran this interesting field experiment. They emailed more than 6,500 professors at the top 250 schools pretending to be the students. And they wrote letters saying, I really admire your work. Would you have some time to meet? The…

Join the Fearless Movement, Andre Leneal's Debut Album

Hi, Friends and fans! Check it!

André Leneal, one of my best friends--a brother in all but blood--is in the final hours of his very own Kickstarter campaign to produce his debut album, The Fearless Movement. He's a ridiculously talented songwriter and singer, and a uniquely beautiful human being to boot. If you know him, as some of you do, you already know that. If not, this is your chance to start doing so. (Here he is; music at the bottom.)

Am I writing to you because André is among the most giving people I've ever met, possessing a boundless generosity for love? Because he's someone who's been by my side through the thickest of thicks; who I've witnessed literally give someone the coat off his back in the coldest of Chicago winters; who's always found the time and energy for compassion toward others, even through two periods of homelessness, even through the loss of both parents to cancer?

Am I writing because he's one of the funniest and liveliest people I know, someone who always lights up a room, whose warmth is palpable and laughter is infectious?

Am I writing because I've had the pleasure of creatinng music, theatre and photography with him? Because he's completely dedicated to his art and damn good at it, a soulful and expressive voice, and a force to be reckoned with as a songwriter? Because he's talented across multiple genres of music? Because his intelligence runs so deep, both intellectually and emotionally, that he's able to draw from all these experiences and talents to create songs that are at once beautiful, thoughtful, well-crafted and of-the-moment?

Yes, actually, I write for all these reasons.

And on top of all that, I write because it's his moment and I believe in him. I've had the good fortune to see André improving his art for the last 15 years. As an artist myself, I know firsthand how having the resources to polish production can mean the difference between something pretty good and something great; as a human, I can think of few people more deserving of the opportunities he's pursued, often against many odds, so tirelessly, and fearlessly.

I myself am proud to have backed The Fearless Movement.

There isn't much time left! I know all of you care about art and music, and I hope this will be something you'll feel compelled to be a part of. Make sure to click through to check it.

The campaign, which ends tomorrow night, can be found at: http://kck.st/1hDdHwj

Thanks for taking a look, all.

Cheers,

Jesús

PS: Dance Prints update coming this weekend!

Together we will finance and release the Fearless Movement, a soul record about feeling fear and finding courage and living love

It's a wrap! We did it!!!!!! I'm so ridiculously thrilled right now. And though I usually hate being in front of the camera, this is how I've been feeling for the last day

I have so many personal notes of thanks to get out, emails to return and a ton of work I need to get done over the next few days but I wanted to take a quick moment to say to all of you:

Thank you.

Thank you!!!

Thank you!!!!!!!!

I couldn't have done this without a tremendous network of friends and supporters, and I'm simply over the moon about sharing this journey with you. The work that'll come out of this is gonna be even better than what you've already seen; I promise you're gonna love it.

There'll be other updates, thoughts, and new work in the next few days and throughout the creation process too, so stay tuned for that.

In the meantime, back to work for me! And a little celebration.

I cannot say how grateful I am. You are my own personal rockstars. Huge hugs to all of you.

Jesús

Some last-minute love for Dance Prints from Diply. Thanks, Erin & staff!

Jesús Chapa-Malacara is a former professional ballet dancer turned rad photographer. Based out of Brooklyn and Boston, Chapa-Malacara merged his passion for photography and dance into one. The series entitled "Dance Prints" isn't only about producing cool photography (even though it's pretty awesome) but also as a reference.

He's almost at his goal for his Kickstarter project, so click here to help him reach it! -> http://bit.ly/Kickstarterprints

Friends!

We've got less than 2 days until the campaign for Dance Prints comes to an end and we are so, so close--at 92%! You are the ones who've gotten it here: through your pledges, your shares, your write-ups, your encouragement, your belief in being a part of an art-making process to make work that is at once beautiful, thoughtful and changing the way we see the visual and performing arts.

Let me share with you a story on that last bit: a couple weeks back, I had a meeting with a major art institution, the education team of one the world's foremost ballet companies; though I'd worked with some of their dancers independently before, they'd called me in officially for the first time ever, to talk about the work behind Dance Prints and Esprit de Corps (the ballet photos).

I didn't really know what to expect from the meeting. We introduced ourselves and spoke about our respective work. I then asked, "How do you see photography playing a role in all this?" They spoke particularly about how the work inspired them as art advocates, about its potential for reaching new audiences and how it revealed dance in ways unlike any they'd come across before, about how the work carried the potential to resolve years of struggle in making apparent to new audiences, as well as students from the urban core, the beauty and virtuosity of dance. I was floored.

Here was a group of art professionals who'd never met me before, never seen first-hand my passion for the work or heard me talk about it, laying out that they essentially saw the potential in pretty much everything I'd intended for the work: to create photographs that revealed both dance and photography in a way unlike any before it. Part art piece, part reference, a visual compendium of dance that served to be as much a love letter to dance and photography, as an advocacy and education piece for the visual and performing arts.

The icing on the cake was when one person at the meeting, someone with a master's degree in dance science, said, "These photographs illustrate the beauty, trajectory and movement of dance more clearly than any text book I've ever encountered."

What is art if not the revelation of truth through creation? It was one of the most affirming and invigorating moments of having created this work.

Most of you are aware at this point how huge the last month has been for this project and for my career, from the write-ups in mega online sites and international publications to the critical acclaim by major figures in the art worlds (some of you are those writers and people!). The only thing that remains for this stage of the project is to get this Kickstarter campaign across the finish line, and we're so close.

If you feel further moved to support to the project, there's time yet to share it once again with your friends. If you've been a fan on the fence about making or increasing a pledge, now's the time to move on it and help Dance Prints get over the top. In either case, you've been such a tremendous part thus far and I'm so grateful and honored by your outpouring of support.

Thank you for being a part of this journey, friends.

All my best,

Jesús

Dance Prints - Humans Slicing Through Space

Did you catch Dance Prints in the Huffington Post, PetaPixel or ADCGlobal? Or maybe Europe is more your thing and you saw it in the Daily Mail, La Repubblica, Slate France or Brekend? Brazil you say? Yeah, Noticias R7 gave the project some love too. Maybe you're dancer that caught the project in Classical Ballet News, DanceSpirit or DancePlug?

Now, it's time to catch the art in your home. To give it to your friends. And to make the next stage of the project a possibility. Check it to become a part today:
