Sound Laboratories makes electric guitar and bass guitar pickups by hand. We take pride in everything we make. We promise to make musicians happy with our products if we are not about to meet the musicians expectations we offer a full return so long as the items are undamaged. We do not provide return shipping. We are interested in all things sound and technology. We also record and produce bands specializing in rock, blues, metal and pretty much anything with drums, bass, guitar, synths, vocals and piano.

Mission: To explore, create, build and invent all things related to sound.

Scott Weiss & The Magic Strat JH Pickup Set

Scott Weiss demo’ing the Magic Strat JH pickup set. JH for Jimi Hendrix. The magnets are reverse exactly like Jimi had it done when he flipped his right handed to left. This configuration surprisingly sounds dope. I stopped in to Water Wheel Guitars in Milford, PA to say hello and Scott rocked it. Listen to Scott play.

The Sound Laboratories Magic Strat JH. What’s the JH?? Why it stands for Jimi Hendrix. Because Jimi flipped his guitar around it shifted the magnetic poles lending to that great sound he got from his guitar. The folks at Water Wheel Guitars in Milford, PA asked for this custom set of Stratocaster pickups and they LOVE EM’! They’ve order more. You need them for your strat.

Every few weeks I pitch pickups. That means I go door to door with my goods. Being I am in New York City it’s natural for store owners to look bored when I approach them but in typical NYC fashion they put up with me praying inside “I hope this goes quick.” What I love is the WOW! look I get when they hear my pickups in my basses and guitars.

This guitar is quickly becoming my favorite. I’ve had it for 4 years. Hand sanded and contoured to me by my friend and neighbor Vince of Vince Valenti guitars.
It was outfitted with a P90 and a Tele lead pickup. It’s had more pickups in it than any other guitar in my collection. I had no trouble zeroing on the bridge pickup sound but the P90’s were meh.
I wound 2 different mini Humbuckers in last 2 weeks between jobs. The 2nd mini Humbucker is strong and warm at 23k ohm. I eliminated the tone control and added 2 volume pots (250k and 500k+treble bleed circuit) and a 3 way switch. It’s truly amazing!

This mid 80's Hamer owned by King Willie of the band Attack was outfitted with a powerful set of Sound Laboratories PJ combination of pickups. During the installation I carefully painted a Faraday Cage in the control and pickup cavities. I spared nothing in grounding and securing the instrument from any stray humms or buzzes. The single coil has tall Alnico5 beveled magnets with 30k of resistance. The Split Coil (known as the Split Pea) also has tall Alnico5 beveled magnets and comes in at 23k ohm. Combined or separate there is an amazing bass sound with zero noise. Willie not only got a Faraday Cage of his very own he also got brand new potentiometers and capacitors.

I've been experimenting with Mini Humbuckers and getting amazing results with varying wire and magnet combinations. These pickups will be called the "Capital Cities. As a trial I installed my first Capital Cities pickup in a Pine-Caster which had been routed for a P90 style pickup. I think it looks great but the sound is incredible. How do you think it looks? Remember it's just a prototype and the routing is for a P90.

My 2 favorite parts about making pickups is pushing boundaries and watching a musicians face fill with delight once they hear their pickups.

Receiving a lot of Telecaster pickup orders this month. Humbuckers are almost as popular. Check out the Mexican Strat photo. This guitar went from sounding good to sounding awesome!!! Really awesome!!! It has a 7114 lead humbucker, a reverse wound Magic Strat single coil in the middle position and the very excellent Sound Laboratories lipstick pickup in the neck.

Just in from Sound Laboratories, Jag 1 bass pickups for the Fender Bass VI and Squier Bass VI. Inspired by the hot growly sound of the Rickenbacker 4003. The pickups are strong, bassy and full of growl. More to come.

Sound is Our Business

At Sound Laboratories we are interested in all things related to Sound and Technology. We not only record and produce bands we also build and modify a lot of our own equipment. We started out building microphones from brass pipes and schematics. As time continued our curiosity grew into building microphone pre amplifiers, equalizers and pickups. Our sonic quest is to push boundaries in order to achieve the best sounds attainable to satisfy an unquenchable desire to know how things work. It won’t stop here! Check in to see what’s under the soldering iron next. It could be a synthesizer or a AD/DA converter. DIY is our bread and butter. If you are a sonic DIY’er please share your creations and or modifications.
