VisionIntoArt

VisionIntoArt VisionIntoArt is a new music & interdisciplinary arts production company in New York City

Collaborating across forms and cultures, VisionIntoArt creates trans-media work drawn from today. Transcending genre -- from abstract New Music to Politics -- VIA challenges audiences to see and hear art differently. A diverse, multi-disciplinary collective, inhabiting sound and sharing process, VisionIntoArt embraces the role of the artist as public intellectual and political touchstone. VisionIntoArt is a new music ensemble based in New York City, devoted to premiering collaborative interdisciplinary works by its resident and guest composers. VIA has worked with the most dynamic and exciting artists in New York City, and each performance explores new music in collaboration with newly commissioned film, movement, theater, animation, poetry, and video art. A composer-run collective, VIA’s multimedia performances explore interdisciplinary work from a musical starting point. ALL VIA ARTISTS SING, MOVE, AND IMPROVISE. VisionIntoArt was founded in 1999 at the Juilliard School with the aim of attracting a larger and more diverse audience to contemporary art. This collective of compelling emerging artists -- a Nuyorican Prize winning poet, a Sundance nominated filmmaker, award-winning composers and writers, and critically acclaimed musicians and actor -- works together to create innovative programs that brim with artistic and intellectual virtuosity. VIA performances lead audiences through an exploration of interdisciplinary languages; they inquire into the role of creative expression in a democratic society. VisionIntoArt believes that collaboration sustains artistic innovation. The group has performed nationally in such venues as Lincoln Center, BAM Café, Symphony Space, the Whitney Museum, and Joe’s Pub. VIA maintains a busy touring schedule as well, appearing at colleges and universities in the US, such as Dickinson College and North Carolina School of the Arts, and performs at international festivals such as Apertif in Concerto at Teatro Manzoni and Etna Fest in Italy, and the contemporary art/music fairs in Mexico City (MACO) and Belgrade, Serbia (BEAMUS). VIA artists have collaborated with renowned artists worldwide including Kronos Quartet, Philip Glass and John Zorn, Paquito D’Rivera, and filmmaker Dario Argento.

“Always intriguing and frequently beguiling,” VisionIntoArt is a multimedia producing company based out of the Brooklyn music venue National Sawdust that “facilitates flamboyant, confounding and enticing collaborations” (New York Times). With the belief that collaboration sustains artistic innovation, VIA creates and commissions works that involve various disciplines, presented around the world for the general audience, and forged from the most exciting emerging and established artists living today as well as interdisciplinary experts including scientists and conservationists. We are a one-stop-shop for artists in many disciplines – we incubate, produce, and disseminate. Since Paola Prestini co-founded the company in 1999 at the Juilliard School, VIA has created and performed over seventy original works and has produced half a dozen albums through their self titled record label. In Spring 2016, the newly-opened Brooklyn music venue National Sawdust became the official home of VisionIntoArt. Now with a physical home and vast network of emerging and established artists, VisionIntoArt continues to develop and premiere multimedia works as the producing and touring arm of the venue. VIA’s works have been seen at Lincoln Center, the Barbican Centre (London), Atlas Performing Arts Center (Washington, DC), HIFA (Harare, Zimbabwe), BAM (Brooklyn, NY), and the Kennedy Center, along with residencies at MASS MoCA and The Park Avenue Armory. They have also toured to colleges and universities in the US, and to international festivals such as Apertif in Concerto at Teatro Manzoni, Etna Fest in Italy, and BEMUS in Belgrade, Serbia.

The White House's new environmental policy is nearly nonexistent. Now is a prime time to support artistic work with an environmental conscience like The Colorado and environmental activist organizations like the Environmental Voter Project and the Environmental Law Institute.

Who are you counting on to keep an eye out for our planet?

Performance Review: Missy Mazzoli, Breaking the Waves – The Log Journal

National Sawdust's newest initiative, The Log Journal, writes about the recent collaboration between Missy Mazzoli and #DogDays librettist Royce Vavrek.

With films such as 2011’s Melancholia, with its obvious references to Wagner, the director Lars von Trier hasn’t shied away from operatic ambition. So perhaps it shouldn’t be surprising that composer Missy Mazzoli and librettist Royce Vavrek found inspiration in his 1996 film Breaking the Waves. The...

VAN Magazine, you get us! Thanks for the thoughtful coverage.

"Beyond the journey it chronicles, 'The Hubble Cantata' suggests a deeper, more subtextual journey: a peek into the future of classical music, one as full of endless possibilities as the cosmos it explores."

Let's all keep exploring!

We just had the world premiere of The Hubble Cantata for an audience of over 6,000 but our Kickstarter is still running! Help us bring this work to even more people! http://kck.st/29Q3Zv1

The Observer said of our performance this weekend "...The Hubble Cantata is a work that knows no parallel, pushing boundaries of technology and presentation that push our city’s relationship with multi-disciplinary performance further into uncharted territory."

The Cosmos Sings in This Fusion of Astrophysics and Music

"The live event will weave together orchestral music, choirs, film and virtual reality technology. The story, Prestini tells Smithsonian.com, looks to connect abstract scientific concepts and the all-too human story of struggling through hardship and loss."

Thanks to Smithsonian Magazine for the great feature on The Hubble Cantata! Come see the world premiere this Saturday at BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! Festival.

'The Hubble Cantata' Weds Live Music with VR Views of the Cosmos

"But at the end of the day, 'Hubble Cantata' is about people, Prestini told Live Science, calling the installation 'less a story about space and more a human story.' McNitt agreed, adding that the installation represents our connection to the cosmos, and that the VR experience 'explores the parallels between human life on Earth and stars in the heavens.'"

Thanks LiveScience for the coverage!

An event combining virtual reality and live musical performance aims to bring together a 20-piece orchestra, a 100-person choir and breathtaking views of the cosmos captured by the Hubble Space Telescope.
