Uprose hosted the book launch of the new novel by Sunset Park resident, author, public health educator and activist Elena Schwolsky this month. Our writer Eleanor J. Bader sits with Schwolsky to discuss the elements of autobiography and fiction that make Thursday's Child an emotional story of motherhood, Cuban activism, and identity.

Local nonprofit RaisingHealth, in partnership with NYU Langone Health, provided free hernia screenings at the MADE Bush Terminal. Writer Josiana Lacrete explored the many services offered to Sunset Park residents, as well as seeing a demonstration of a surgical robot in action.

Breuckelen, which means "marshland," is how Brooklyn got its name in the 1600s by the Dutch settlers. With over 346 sinkholes reported in Sunset Park since January, our writer Yulin L. investigates "ghost streams" and climate change pushing an increase in sinkholes and safety concerns in our neighborhood.

Breuckelen —que significa «marisma»— es el nombre que los colonos holandeses dieron a Brooklyn en el siglo XVII. Members of The United Senior Citizen Center of Sunset Park sashayed fabulous looks at a recent celebration for Mother's Day, with guest designer Pedro Cruz Valdez in attendance. We stopped by the Center to catch the catwalk, feel the community vibes and celebrate mothers.

May is National Small Business Month and we got to connect with a new small business in Sunset Park! Angel Gonzalez and his partner Zachary Taylor recently opened "La Tienda" to be a staple in the community. Writer Oliver Steyn-Reimer talks with the new small business owners about their history with Sunset Park and their love for the neighborhood.

Writer Gregg Stankewicz investigates the disc-shaped fruits of elm trees around our neighborhood and the likeliness that they could be a nice addition to your dinner.
