How People Protected Themselves from the Paranormal

Every culture has its own way of keeping the unknown at bay. What’s fascinating is how many of these beliefs overlap, even in places that never had contact with each other.

Iron and Nails
In European folklore, iron was more than just metal—it was a barrier against spirits and witches. That’s why blacksmiths were respected in old villages, and why a horseshoe over a doorway wasn’t just decoration. Iron was believed to burn or repel anything supernatural that tried to cross it.

Salt
Salt shows up everywhere in protective traditions. Some believed a line of salt across a doorway created a barrier spirits couldn’t cross. In Japan, small piles of salt called Morio were placed outside homes and businesses to ward off bad luck. Even today, paranormal investigators sometimes carry salt as a simple protective measure.

Herbs and Plants
Sage is probably the most well-known, but cultures worldwide relied on plants for protection. Rosemary planted at the edge of property was said to keep wandering spirits out. Mugwort was burned to keep away nightmares and shadow figures. In Appalachia, some families kept bunches of dried herbs hidden in walls or tucked into charm bags for safety.

Charms and Symbols
From Celtic knots carved into doorframes to crosses hung above beds, people turned to symbols for strength. Even everyday objects were used as protective charms. In parts of Europe, scissors were left open under a pillow to “cut away” bad dreams or keep witches from stealing children.

These practices tell us something powerful: humans have always searched for ways to feel safe when facing the unknown. And maybe, just maybe, some of these methods work more than we realize.

What about you? Do you carry a personal protection item—or have you ever tried one of these methods during an investigation?

🚨 Please Read – Let’s All Introduce Ourselves 🚨

We’re the Zero H☣︎ur Project—a family of four chasing the history and hauntings that refuse to stay buried.

⚡ Barry – founder of Zero H☣︎ur. A childhood encounter with the paranormal is what set me on this path.
⚡ Jaime – my wife and the anchor of our team. She had never experienced the paranormal before Zero H☣︎ur, but now she keeps us grounded when the energy and fear start to rise.
⚡ Kaylann (14) – bold, witty, and always ready to push deeper into the unknown.
⚡ Kinlee (11) – empathetic, intuitive, and often the first to sense when something is with us.

Together, we explore haunted locations, share their history, and document what unfolds—through our travels, our podcast, and our growing community.

Now we’d love to hear from you:
👉 Who are you?
👉 Do you explore solo or with a team?
👉 What makes your crew unique?
👉 What got you into the paranormal?

Drop your introductions in the comments—we can’t wait to meet the people walking this same path 👇

Hey everyone, we’re always on the lookout for new gear and fresh ideas.
We’ve got the basics covered—spirit boxes, recorders, EMF meters—but we know there’s a lot more out there.

Do you have any lesser-known tools that you’d recommend?
Or maybe a shop or maker we should check out for equipment?

We’d love to hear what’s worked for you—drop your suggestions and tags below 👇

Detecting Good vs. Malevolent Spirits — And Protecting Yourself

Not all spirits are created equal. Some bring peace. Others bring terror. Knowing the difference can be the key between a safe encounter… and one you’ll never forget.

Good Spirits

Detection:

Gentle EVPs — soft voices, names, or whispers of reassurance.

Cold spots that feel calm instead of threatening.

Lights flickering, REM pods lighting up steadily instead of erratically.

Dreams or visions that bring clarity rather than fear.

Protection:

Most of the time, protection isn’t needed. These spirits aren’t here to harm, but it never hurts to keep a positive, respectful approach.

Malevolent Spirits

Detection:

Sudden overwhelming dread, nausea, or the feeling of being watched.

Violent activity — scratches, pushes, doors slamming.

Growls or distorted voices on Spirit Boxes or recorders.

Shadow figures moving unnaturally fast or appearing with glowing eyes.

Protection:

Sage or Palo Santo: Cleanse the area and yourself after investigating.

Protective symbols: Crosses, religious medals, or sigils depending on your beliefs.

Salt barriers: Along doors or windows to block energy from following you home.

Firm boundaries: Speak out loud — “You are not allowed to touch me. You cannot follow me.”

Spiritual allies: Carry items that ground you (crystals like obsidian, or personal objects with meaning).

Good spirits want to be remembered. Malevolent ones want to control. If you learn the signs — and walk in prepared — you hold the power in the encounter.

Do you carry protection with you when you visit haunted places, or do you go in with nothing but courage?

Hey everyone, quick question — does anybody know a person or a solid company that makes custom plushies? We’ve been tossing around the idea of creating some and would love to find someone reliable to work with. If you’ve got recommendations or know someone who’s done this before, let us know in the comments!

Thanks in advance for pointing us in the right direction.
