Jazz Night School at The Frame Gallery

Jazz Night School at The Frame Gallery Workshops designed to teaching Jazz improv in an ensemble setting. And it's fun! The purpose of Jazz Music Night School is to offer musicians an opportunity to explore, play, and gain a better understanding of America’s most original and significant contribution to world culture—the art of traditional jazz music.

In our studies we discuss the evolution and history of jazz, as well as learn the basics of how to play the blues and improvise in the context of jazz standards. To put it another way, instead of reading notes on a page, we give the students the knowledge and tools they need to help them hear, feel, and play the music that’s inside of them. Our mission statement is simply:

Session III (March 16, 2020) of V sessions is in the books.

The workshop continues on. The workshop goes into detail covering
well known jazz tunes and some original practice tips by the instructor, Greg Tivis.

Tunes the group is working on-

Killer Joe-a Benny Golson classic. The bass line makes this tune happen-great bass work by Mr. Ray Brown, swinging groove by Mr. Grady Tate.

Blue Daniel-another great drummer on this one, Shelly Manne. This tune is in three-four time.

and the Jazz classic- Maiden Voyage by the great Herbie Hancock. Described (drums) as a "floaty"-8th note feel.

Follow along, play along, give these a listen this week.

Keep it positive, challenging period we're in and also opportunities...

For the serious musician! This is fun and challenging also. A good review for the experienced musician.

An encouragement to practice and keep moving ahead! This is an outline from a past Jazz Night School @ the Frame Gallery workshop-Greg Tivis instructor. Hopefully this will give you some ideas on areas to work on.

Jazz Improv II: The Journey

Our summer course at Jazz Night School is designed for the intermediate
to advanced students who can already improvise and are looking to improve
their skills and overall musicianship. In this course we'll explore the
complex language of jazz, with in depth discussions of chord relationships,
two-fives and turnarounds, tri-tone substitution chords, modal jazz and
more, with practical skill sets you can begin to apply to your solos.

Course Outline: (from Summer 2017).

Monday, June 5, 7 - 9pm The Language of Jazz - in this class we'll discuss and debate the old adage that Jazz is a language, we'll listen to examples, and we'll apply some of what we learn to some blues and familiar standards.

Saturday, June 10, 1 - 4pm -- Two Fives and Turnarounds (**YOU DON'T WANT TO MISS THIS ONE) In this three hour workshop we'll discuss the importance and the ambiguity of two fives and turnarounds,

Monday, June 12, 7 - 9 pm -- Tri-tones, altered tonality and hybrid scales In a continuation of the two five discussion, in this class we'll take it to a new level and learn about their alter-egos . . the "tri-tone substitution chords" and learn how to play "outside" the diatonic scales. We'll also dive into diminished scales and their uses.

Monday, June 19, 7 - 9pm -- Modal Jazz: What is it? Why is it? What are common modal tunes? We'll get into it all!

Monday, June 26, 7 - 9pm -- a jazzer's approach to ballads - Ballads are often called the "hardest to play." we'll explore some great ballads, as well as how ballads are typically approached in a jazz setting

Jazz Night School (JNS) @ the Frame Galley in historical downtown Bryan, Texas

Session II (March 9, 2020) of V sessions is in the books.

The workshop is a combination of instruction, guided improvisation and group playing. The instructor, Greg Tivis, is presenting practical and expert instruction in areas like jazz patterns, scales and their application, chord progressions and practical analysis.

One interesting example was the historical look at “stock jazz licks” such as in Charlie Parker’s playing in Now’s the Time. Learning from the Masters of Jazz is a proven way of learning and growing as a musician.

The new tune for the week is Maiden Voyage (in the modal jazz style) by Herbie Hancock. This was recorded in 1965 for Blue Note Records. Give it a listen this week.

Jazz Night School (JNS) is affiliated with the newly formed Brazos Valley Jazz Society

and the Texas Jazz Educators Association

Stay tuned and join us at a future workshop.
