“It should be mentioned that the details of the car changed along the way. Customs are often fluid concepts. The original plan was to use a custom bar grille with the bars the same distance apart as the ones in the original Riviera parking light bezels, and to put the headlights behind the parking light lenses. As you can see from the photos, that changed. That bar grille was passed on to a friend’s Riviera custom project. Gary and I sat down in Brown’s Indianapolis shop one day and hashed out a new front end design. Boston Bill Dillman had a ’57 DeSoto front bumper bar gathering dust and it was decided to use that - reshaped, shortened, and sectioned front-to-back - as the grille bar. Brown capped the ends of the front fenders and made new bezels to hold the upper pair of a ’66 Cadillac’s stacked headlights. He then created aluminum blades to go in the center of those so that from the side, they follow the contour of the fenders. Max Grundy changed the concept drawing to match the new fender and light design. Brown did a few other things, like reworking the stock power windows and the vent wings to work with the chopped top, and customizing the ’65 Riviera taillight bezels.

It was then that Brown decided to move his shop back home to New York, so Lorraine was relocated again, this time to Street Rods by Michael in Shelbyville, Tennessee, only 15 miles from my home. The plan was to take her there next anyway, but Brown’s move accelerated the timetable a little. Street Rods by Michael is a top-notch street rod builder with a great reputation and the plan was to have them do the drivetrain installation and several other mechanics.” - 𝐂𝐚𝐫 𝐊𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐃𝐞𝐥𝐮𝐱𝐞 118 𝐢𝐬 𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐍𝐎𝐖 🔥

“Naturally, the build started with Masterson. He enlisted Bill Hines to help lay out the top chop, a five-and-a-half-inch vertical drop! Hines drew the cut lines on the top with a Sharpie, and Masterson and his crew did the chop. It’s interesting to note that no new metal was used. The various pieces cut out were used to fill in other places. The rear window was laid down and remains stock size. Also while at Masterson’s, the front fenders were extended four inches and the rear quarters were extended four inches at the bottom, making the angle above the ’65 Riviera rear bumper about the same as the rear window’s angle. The hood was modified, also extended four inches, but only in the center. Masterson also reshaped the side scoop area right behind the doors. All of the work done by Masterson, and there was a lot, was accomplished in lead. He used no plastic filler at all.

In a little bit of reverse engineering, artist Max Grundy created a concept drawing of Lorraine, but named LOWRAIN to match the car’s intended license plate, which can only have seven letters. This was done after the car was chopped and stretched, but still at Masterson’s.

When Masterson finished the original reshaping, the Riviera was moved to Brown’s Metal Mods, then located in Indianapolis. Gary Brown, also exceptionally talented, is the head dude there, and he works alongside his brother Dylan. That shop has since moved to Port Leyden, New York, the Browns’ hometown. You may be familiar with the Deco Rides Zephyr cars they built for Terry Cook, or more recently, the custom Buick Nailhead-powered Volkswagen Beetle, the “Berlin Buick.” - 𝐂𝐚𝐫 𝐊𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐃𝐞𝐥𝐮𝐱𝐞 118 𝐢𝐬 𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐍𝐎𝐖 🔥

“He thought to himself at least all the hard stuff was done: the 6" chop and 3" traditional body drop (past pinch, lays flat rocker) as well as a welded two-piece hood with rounded corners, capped window frames, deleted b pillars (made into a hard top), custom splash pans, and smoothed bumpers. There was a long list of shaved areas, including the taillights, door and trunk handles, side trims, gas door, drip rails, and firewall. It also had custom-fabricated inner fenders. Ryan Cambra had completed all the work to date. The car sat nicely on air ride suspension—another box ticked. Unfortunately, it had no front windshield or back window, and the front bucket seats sat inside with no interior. The original dash and glove box were shaved, and the speaker grill had also been removed. It wasn't the look Albert was going for, so the guys from McMillian Speed and Fab immediately reinstalled the original 1952 dash. The car's exterior was painted a satin red, which was "Good from far but far from good," as they say. It definitely needed a lot of work, but once the one-piece front windshield from an Oldsmobile was installed, along with a new back window, Pilpil began driving the car around to get a feel for what he had bought!
After a few months of enjoying the car as it was, the engine decided it was too tired to keep pushing.“ - Ol’ Skool Rodz 117🔥

“Now that he had the Starliner looking the way he wanted it to, it was time to hit the road and start making some memories! Trawick drove the car all the way to Viva Las Vegas and back with no problems or hiccups. Then two days later made a trip to Austin, Texas, for the Lonestar Round Up with his buddies and all their rides. Unfortunately, he had some fuel problems on the way, with several fuel pump swaps and a couple of tow truck rides, but they finally made it in time to enjoy the show. That's the joy of owning these old classics!

After Texas, they proceeded to Sacramento for the Autorama the following weekend. The car received the Squires CC Ladies Choice Award and the Suede Pavilion Drive-In People's Choice Award there. What a great compliment. Three shows in three weekends and about three thousand miles is a trip Trawick will never forget. It's always exciting driving these old cars around, and you never know what problem will happen next, what people you will meet, or what fun you'll have when you least expect it!” - 𝐂𝐚𝐫 𝐊𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐃𝐞𝐥𝐮𝐱𝐞 118 𝐢𝐬 𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐍𝐎𝐖 🔥

“Just like many young boys, Albert Pilpil was obsessed with Hot Wheels. Whether he was crashing, jumping, or racing them, they kept him entertained for hours as a kid. Collecting model cars was another one of his favorite childhood hobbies. He was always pulling them apart and changing their appearance, so they looked exactly how he wanted them to. The custom bug had bitten young! Now, as an adult, not much has changed except instead of toy cars, they're bigger, drivable, and made of steel! All the cars in Pilpil’s collection are Chevys, and he has several projects currently in the build phase. If it wasn't the 1936 Chevy Coupe he was working on, it was the 1954 Chevy Belair. So, when he ran across this 1952 Chevy Deluxe 2 Door on the internet, listed at a reasonable price, he started to think that maybe he should get it. Three is always a charm! The idea was to give it some TLC, flip it, and make some extra money to pour back into the projects he already had underway. We all come up with ways to convince ourselves, right? So, after a lot of thought, he decided to buy it, even though it needed extensive work to get to the finish line.“ - Ol’ Skool Rodz 117🔥

“Trawick cruised the Starliner all the way back to his garage and immediately got to work changing out the wheels and tires along with the disk brake conversion up front. The job was made a little easier with the help of "Ginger" Kyle Stickland and Brock Conner. The following year was the start of a long list of modifications, shaping the car to look the way Trawick had envisioned.

John Sunseri was called on to perform all the paint and metal work and even took the time to show Trawick how to get his hands dirty so he could help out where possible! The emblems, mirrors, antenna, and door handles were shaved, and the car was painted a stock Ford Sky Mist Blue, with a Violet Ice Pearl shot over the top of it. The roof was painted Black with Silver Metal Flake, which ended up being Trawick's favorite part of the car in the end. Mat Egan stepped in to lay out and fog the custom panels in black, and then Sunseri shot Cobalt HOK Candy over the panels and finished them with layers of wet clear.

Jake Watts at OC Muffler Man installed the 4-link rear suspension and welded together a clean custom exhaust. Under the hood was a stock Ford 352 FE motor backed by a C4 transmission. After staring at the car painted, Trawick decided to keep the White '64 Galaxie interior that was already fitted up. It looked really good, and as they say, don’t fix it if it ain’t broke! Sean Alves then went through the car's mechanical elements to get her running the way she should.” - 𝐂𝐚𝐫 𝐊𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐃𝐞𝐥𝐮𝐱𝐞 118 𝐢𝐬 𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐍𝐎𝐖 🔥

“We all love scrolling aimlessly through the eBay "Cars for Sale" pages, even when we're not looking for anything in particular! This is exactly what Roger Trawick was doing when he came across a stunning 1960 Ford Starliner. He had always had a soft spot for Starliners as they brought back fond memories of the '61 Galaxie he owned back in the 90s. 1960 Ford Starliners were released as the fastback version of their full-size brother, the Galaxie. They were only available for two years, making them a more desirable model. They had an ultra-sleek look that embodied a 1960 Jet Age design, with its thin pillars, big glass, and bubble top resemblance. Trawick felt these big old Fords drove down the road so nicely, and he really wanted to own another cool '60s car. The classic he found on eBay was located in central California in a place called Chowchilla. He decided to go on a road trip there with his friend Sean Alves, some snacks, and a wad of cash in his pocket just in case he felt like loading her up.

When they arrived at the location of the car, he looked it over and instantly noticed it was pretty much stock except for the '64 Galaxie interior. It had big wheels under the guards wrapped in small tires, and the front coils had been cut, which laid it down super low. Definitely not the look he was going for, but he knew it was a simple change and did not let it sway his decision! They took the car out for a quick spin around the block, and it drove pretty well.” - 𝐂𝐚𝐫 𝐊𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐃𝐞𝐥𝐮𝐱𝐞 118 𝐢𝐬 𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐍𝐎𝐖 🔥

“The complete restoration from start to finish took around two years. The car is truly a classic beauty. Everyone does a double take as it cruises down the street. In saying that, Schoenberg does not drive the car very often. He has quite a collection of cars to choose from and tries to spread the love! In fact, he has 15 cars in total and is currently building five radical kustom cars. He has taken the Mercury out to car shows, and this year it won first place radical kustom at the Grand National Roadster Show. Even though Schoenberg has a bunch of cars, this one holds a special place in his heart. The fact it’s Barris-built makes it extra special. Its history is his favorite part of the car!” - 𝐂𝐚𝐫 𝐊𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐃𝐞𝐥𝐮𝐱𝐞 118 𝐢𝐬 𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐍𝐎𝐖 🔥

“Let’s talk about the modifications. Rod Powell pulled out the saw and chopped the top 4”. The car was nosed, decked, and shaved all around. Skirts were added, and a white vinyl Carson top was laid down. The front bumper was off a 1955 Cadillac that was modified and cut to fit, while the rear bumper was pulled from a 1952 Ford. The grill was left stock while the headlights were 1953 Buick-frenched scoops, and the taillights came from a 1953 Oldsmobile. The entire car was rewired with an American Auto Wiring Kit to ensure it fires up every time and the lights work when needed! Westminister got the job of wrapping the kustom pleats and roll upholstery over custom bench seats from Wise Guys. It turned out incredible, perfectly complementing the exterior of the car. The dashboard is grafted from a 1947 Ford with 1947 dash gauges. A 1956 Ford F-150 steering column sits beneath it, complimented by a 1949-1951 Mercury Accessory. Under the hood is a 305 IROC SBC motor backed by a 350 automatic transmission. The car sits perfectly on 650OR 16” Diamond Back wheels fitted with 16” Radial White Walls and 16” Cadillac Sombrero hubcaps that were extremely hard to fit! Last but not least, the interior was equipped with air conditioning to keep you cool and cruising in style.” - 𝐂𝐚𝐫 𝐊𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐃𝐞𝐥𝐮𝐱𝐞 118 𝐢𝐬 𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐍𝐎𝐖 🔥

“Sometimes, the stars align just long enough for miracles to happen, and in this particular instance, the story goes like this...Once upon a time, Sam Schoenberg got his hands on a 1940 Mercury Convertible built by the original King of Kustomizers, George Barris, back in 1957. Barris became famous for designing and building some of the most iconic Hollywood custom cars. Among his most recognizable cars are the Batmobile and Munster Koach, to name a few. His one-of-a-kind creations are absolutely legendary. So, when this Mercury became available, Schoenberg didn't think twice. He scooped it up immediately since owning a Barris-built car is a true treasure! He found the car in San Jose, California, and after giving it a thorough look, he realized the paint was in good condition, but everything else was a little rough around the edges, and the car needed a lot of work. Luckily, Schoenberg owned Sam's Kustom Kars, so he restored the car over the next two years, giving it a complete makeover. Everything was touched besides the Candy Purple paint job!” - 𝐂𝐚𝐫 𝐊𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐃𝐞𝐥𝐮𝐱𝐞 118 𝐢𝐬 𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐍𝐎𝐖 🔥

“If you paint a car, make it yours. You don’t want it mixed up with someone else’s car.” - Hoodoo

“The line work is inspired by chrome lines of other cars, specifically the icon ‘57 Buick chrome’s swoop. Shoeboxes are simple so breaking up the flat panels can be challenging. Two panels highlight the hood crease and that carries back through the roof and down the trunk. Hoodoo had a month to complete the paint job inside a small garage, outside of his normal 40 hours work week. The weather challenged him with 110 degree temperatures, a compressor blew up, but you can’t keep a good painter down.”- 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐝 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐛𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝 𝐢𝐧 𝐂𝐚𝐫 𝐊𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐃𝐞𝐥𝐮𝐱𝐞 110!

“Over the course of the time from 2010 to mid 2019 Ryno built a bunch of customer cars, and worked on about 10 cars of Ryno’s own. Finally it was time to get Helen done, or sell her. The decision was made to sell her and almost immediately Ryno’s friend Gary Anderson and his wife Brandi called about the car. They loved Helen and the direction that the car was going so they bought the car and hired Ryno to finish it out. It only took another year or so to get through with previously promised builds so that it could get back on the schedule.

When asked if they fully bought in to the car as it was in the renderings, Gary had a couple of reservations, “I didn’t like the wheels and I wasn’t 100% on the paint, so we changed the wheels and I eventually came around on the color.”

Ryno was quick to respond, “Because that green is AWESOME!”

Brandi replied with a laugh, “We changed the wheels from the spokes to the Tru Spoke Supreme wheels because… If you know the Hot Rods of Omaha people, we don’t clean… we park, grab beers, and scatter. We’re not cleaning spoke wheels kinda people!”

Ryno took the car to Hartsville, TN to Mike Howell at Volunteer Auto Body Shop for the final body & paint. The main green color is a custom mixed PPG color based off of a modern Ford color. The roof and an accent panel on each side of the car were painted silver with a ton of small metal flake. In the sun, this car pops!“ - 𝐂𝐚𝐫 𝐊𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐃𝐞𝐥𝐮𝐱𝐞 118 𝐢𝐬 𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐍𝐎𝐖 🔥

08/24/2023

“Next up the firewall was shaved, the heater box opening was removed, along with a bunch of unnecessary holes and divots. After he smoothed the firewall, Ryno jumped to the dash and shaved the factory radio, center speaker opening, heater controls, ash tray, light switch hole and wiper control to get it as smooth as possible. To change up the look of the exterior of the car, some Impala side trim and birds were sourced to replace the stock wagon trim.

The 700R4’s bigger size meant a new transmission tunnel needed to be fabricated, and the new low altitude meant that the drive shaft tunnel needed to be moved up a bit. After those were addressed, it was finally time to fabricate new floor foot wells to patch up the holes.

Under the hood, Ryno spent two days smoothing the 283 block and heads, to get that custom clean look. A new Edlebrock intake and 1406 carb were added along with a Pertronix kit in the distributor, some Speedway headers and Smithy’s mufflers to get a little better performance. Some Corvette valve covers were swapped on to the engine to dress it up even more. By now the body color had been decided on and the newly smoothed engine and the transmission were painted body color. One unique feature under the hood are the inner fenders, which were made out of the original set of outer fenders to give the engine bay a clean look.

About 10 months into owning the car, with all of this work done, customer cars took over and the car went up on the lift for awhile for storage.“ - 𝐂𝐚𝐫 𝐊𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐃𝐞𝐥𝐮𝐱𝐞 118 𝐢𝐬 𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐍𝐎𝐖 🔥

08/20/2023

“The car came home on a Tuesday after sitting in a field for 12 years, the first thing that he did was try to get it running. First he rigged up a fuel tank, then rolled the engine over a few times by hand, checked spark and decided that the old 283 wanted to run. A few sputters and a little fire later, the engine is purring along with a little lifter clatter and some smoke. A couple of minutes later the engine is running smooth so he naturally wondered how the Powerglide transmission was doing. He set the parking brake and put it in reverse. Success! Drive, success!

With the car’s motivation out of the way, Ryno rebuilt the braking system and Thursday, two days later, Ryno took his wife to lunch with holy floors and “rat p**p flying everywhere.” The transmission was shifting hard, while under the car Ryno pulled the drive shaft to find out that there was no rubber left in the center support bearing. A simple rebuild had the car shifting smoothly.

“I’m kinda a clean freak, so once I knew the motor would run I decided I had to clean it up some. One of my sons was helping me until he found a mouse skeleton!”

Ryno had some various air bag parts laying around the shop from previous builds, so he decided to do some temporary suspension work. He took apart the front suspension and replaced all of the bushings, ball joints, etc. He plated the bottom A-arms to accept the bag mounts and made up some top cups. He then modified the stock rear arms to accept some bags as well.“ - 𝐂𝐚𝐫 𝐊𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐃𝐞𝐥𝐮𝐱𝐞 118 𝐢𝐬 𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐍𝐎𝐖 🔥

“A few years after moving from Southern California to the Joplin, MO area, Ryan “Ryno” Lieberman was following his morning routine of surfing a few key websites for cars and car parts when he saw a “super clean, no rust” 60 Chevy Kingswood 9 passenger wagon that was local to him. After trying to reach the seller a couple of times with no luck, finally he made contact and found out that the seller was not responding “because there’s a guy from California interested in it.”

Since that deal wasn’t done yet, the seller agreed to let Ryno come see the “super clean, rust free” car. When he gets there he immediately spots some rust holes, but hey they all have more rust than a seller says, so he looks deeper. The floors were rusted through in every footwell and a few other spots were less than rust free. Being a recent transplant from CA, Ryno knows what kind of cars that guys out there are expecting when they are told super clean and rust free, and this car is NOT that. Ryno explained that the guy does not want to deal with a mad CA buyer when he gets his new project shipped half way across the country and it is more swiss cheese than rust free.

That evening Ryno showed photos of the car to his wife and she fell in love. No amount of explaining that the scope of work that the car would take would dissuade her, she even had the name “Helen” picked out for the car. So Ryno contacts the seller and makes a deal and picks up the car.“ - 𝐂𝐚𝐫 𝐊𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐃𝐞𝐥𝐮𝐱𝐞 118 𝐢𝐬 𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐍𝐎𝐖 🔥
