❄️🌷 Historic Spring Snowstorm: May 1–3, 2013 🌷❄️

It’s hard to believe, but in early May 2013, the Midwest was buried under a truly unprecedented snowstorm! 😲 From May 1–3, a massive system dumped record-shattering snowfall across the central U.S., especially along the western Mississippi River Valley.

🌨️ What made this storm so incredible?
• Some southern locations saw their FIRST EVER May snowfall 😳
• Kansas & Missouri recorded their highest snowfall totals in 106 years 📊
• Iowa, Minnesota, and Wisconsin shattered daily and storm-total May records 🏆

📍 Hardest hit areas:
South-central Iowa ➡️ southeast Minnesota ➡️ western Wisconsin
➡️ Many spots saw 10+ inches of snow (in MAY!) ❄️❄️❄️

🚗 Impact:
• Warm roads melted snow at first, but heavy bursts quickly took over 🌡️➡️❄️
• Dangerous travel led to numerous accidents & spinouts 🚧
• Snow-laden trees caused sporadic power outages ⚡🌳

📊 Notable Iowa totals:
• Chariton – 12.0" 🥇
• Lake Mills – 11.6"
• Britt & Forest City area – 11.0"
• Northwood – 10.7"
• Multiple locations – 6"+ (including Des Moines at 6.9")

This storm is a reminder that in the Midwest… winter doesn’t always follow the calendar! 😅🌨️

⚠️ SEVERE WEATHER POSSIBLE MONDAY FOR IOWA ⚠️

3️⃣ A Level 3 out of 5 (Enhanced Risk) for severe weather is expected Monday, but there are still some important details that will determine how things play out 👇

🌦️ Morning Matters A LOT
Rain & storms are possible in the morning.

If storms stick around most of the day ☁️🌧️ → the severe threat later will be LOWER
If storms end early ⛅ → the atmosphere can recharge, leading to strong to severe storms in the afternoon/evening ⚡

👉 Honestly, a cloudy, rainy day all day would be the “best case” to keep things quieter 👍

⛈️ What We’re Watching for Monday:

Large hail (main threat) 🧊
Damaging winds 60+ mph 💨
Tornadoes possible 🌪️ (highest risk SE Iowa)
Heavy rain & localized flooding 🌧️

📍 The highest severe threat is expected east of I-35

🕒 Timing:

Storms possible through much of the day
Most severe potential: afternoon into early evening (roughly 12–6 PM)

🌧️ Rainfall Concerns:

Some areas could see 2–3+ inches of rain
Isolated flash flooding possible, especially in urban areas

⚠️ Bottom Line:
This setup is conditional — what happens in the morning will decide how intense the afternoon gets. Stay weather aware and be ready for quick changes.

📲 Make sure you have multiple ways to receive warnings, especially with storms possible after dark!

We’ll keep you updated!
