08/30/2019

Time off was taken due to an attempted burglary, broken sewer line, and rusted out water line. What a summer!

Quick catch-up note: Brushwood events were fantastic! The dragon returned, workshops were fun, the time was too short.

06/17/2019

Index is done! Well, ready to put into the book, anyway. Hope it will help readers.

New Goal: finish up the coloring book and finish editing the Abcedrian System book. Then they will both be ready for the public.

05/19/2019

This book is not going to be available until the proof is in hand: the graphics were a real challenge. Hoping it prints right!

05/19/2019

Phew! finally got to the point of ordering the proof for last month's book!

Still looking forward to the secret May project! Can hardly wait to start on it!

05/01/2019

Technically, I missed the April deadline. But the April book is nearly done, and I am taking two sick days to deal with issues that have come up in the household. So, officially, May 1+2 are now designated as April 31 + 32, respectively. As the Head of the SIA Press Buffalo, I can do that. So there.

04/14/2019

For those who are not artists: By giving structure to the 52 image set that is this month's coloring book project, it has turned into a 134 image tour/meditation of the entire Abcedrian system. Plus narration. I can do this. I can do this. I can do this. (right? yes? please?)

04/05/2019

April: coloring book with about 140 images, one per page, 8 1/2 x 11. Opinion?

04/05/2019

Goal is six drawings cleaned up and ready to reproduce daily. Little goal, can do!

03/30/2019

March mission complete, sort of. The writing is complete, and this book WOULD be published by bedtime. BUT. I am in a debate about submitting to a publisher, or continuing on my own with Lulu.com. There are pluses and minuses both ways. What to do? What to do?

03/26/2019

There will not be a full, new book this month. However, the text should be finished, with new illustrations being done next month.
This is a perfect example of working hard at the beginning of a large project: there were two books in January, so the schedule of 12 new/republished books for the year is still in view!
And, this book is the most important of the whole lot: it is the full explanation of the Abcedrian system of alphabet magic. This is an exciting project, and it is about time it got itself into print!

03/13/2019

Publishing and writing are two pieces of making books for you, dear reader. They are not the same thing, but it is interesting how they mesh when done together. This month's book is a group of work that has been under way for the last 10 or 15 years, and it is finally ready to be under one cover. I do not have a title yet, but will soon. And at the end of March, I have to decide if this one goes to a big publisher, or if I keep it here, under my own label.

03/13/2019

Eagerly awaiting delivery of a whole package of proofs for new books! Stay tuned!

Month two, and another book! keeping up with the "one book a month" commitment. This time it is Inner States of Awareness, featuring the Levels Meditation, start to finish. It is good to go for any background, any belief system, and is ready for purchase at lulu.com.

Most of the cover art work on SiaPressBuffalo books is from Studio Raziel. The artwork is so beautiful, we are considering a photo album of the art pieces to use for meditation and contemplation. What do you think?

For friends who watch what is going on, this year we are striving to publish--or republish--one book per month. This is very challenging, but many of the old (withdrawn) books need a new second edition and need to be available again.
So far, we have several books by Rev. Gretchen A.L. Schork available through Lulu.com:
First Class, An Abcedrian Novel
The Study of Magical Qabalah
Basic, Basic Qabalah (companion booklet)
Ascending the Heights
Djiso's Sib
The Du of Fa

Also available is The Medicine Wheel, by Rev. Donata Ahern.

02/08/2019

The new header image is from the new book, Djiso's Sib. It refers to the sixteen eyes of Gbadu, the spider who sits atop the world palm tree, Aiyzon, and who reports back to the creatrix, Mawu, every day. This is the source of the divination system as interpreted by Legba, and as written up in the book, The Du of Fa.

Father Athanasius Kircher, S.J., Rome, 1602-1680 AD. Fr. Kircher was interested in all knowledge, which he collated, arranged and published. his book "Oedipus Aegyptiacus" covers Chaldean astrology, Hebrew Kabalah, Greek Myuth, Pythagorean mathematics, Arabian alchemy, and Latin philology (history of language). he was able to interview many of the world explorers who came back to Rome (mostly priests and monks) about what they found around the world.
Scribes preserve the past, in this case, by organizing and publishing information for future scholars.

11/19/2018

Nin Shata Pada, Babylon, 1850-1750 BC. She was a princess who directed a shrine for political reasons. In spite of the politics, she was highly qualified, and skillful in writing poetry. Her 'prayer' to a new ruler was so well constructed that it was used as a model for scribe students for a long time after her death.
Scribes work in the environment where they find themselves. Politics and teaching are equally areas of interest to scribes.

11/12/2018

Sin Lequi Umninni, Mesopotamia. 1300-1100 BC. he was an exorcist who compiled the "Epic of Gilgamesh", probably from other written fragments and oral tradition. His name means '(the god) Sin is one who accepts my prayer'. Sin is the Mesopotamian Moon god.
Scribes gather what has been written, often filling in missing parts from other sources, and presenting a complete story for the future.

11/05/2018

Valerie Sutton, USA, modern. Early in her dance career, she worked out a way to record dance movement in diagrams so that choreography would not be lost after the program was performed. Later, she also worked out a way to record sign language into a written form.
That is what scribes do: they record what is happening now so that it is preserved for the future.

Excited that I was able to update the SIAPressBuffalo.weebly.com site with relative ease. No more Summer Sale, but the sale is still on for books. Coming soon: meditation book, incense and oil blends.

John Gregg, 1867-1948 AD. America
Taking down dictation has always been a primary job of the scribe. As business became bigger and executives became busier, their scribe-secretaries had to find ways to speed up their ability to accurately take down the words of the person dictating.
While there were many systems, the one developed by Gregg became the most popular, and the most widespread. It facilitated accuracy and speed in taking notes, and was easier to read back when making a clean copy.
Scribes know that a highly personalized system can create shortcuts to writing everything down, but they also know that there are often times when someone else has to be able to transcribe the notes into a fair copy. Using a system shared by others allows for substitutes to come in and help out when there is too much for one person to handle.

Samuel Morse 1791-1872 AD, America
When the western parts of America were being opened, Morse developed a way to send and receive short and long electric pulses over telegraph wires. Once these were strung, mostly along side railroads, communication over vast distances became possible. His dot-dash system is widely applied, even today, when a quick method of transmitting is needed.
Once again, the scribes of the world found a creative way to render writing into a form that can be transmitted, one letter at a time, to distant places, without having a runner take a physical message. Use of available technology makes scribes like Morse look unlike our idea of a scribe, but he served the communication function needed in his time and place.

Bebian, 1789-1839 AD
French Caribbean
There are many ways to write language so that others can read it. But if you cannot hear, the words will have no sound, no inflection, no voice. To allow the deaf to communicate, Bebian developed a sign language that allows those with sight but no voice to communicate with each other. He worked out one of the first sign languages.
Scribes meet the needs of those they serve. Sometimes this is in creative ways, with unconventional solutions to particular problems. Not all alphabets are written: some involve hand gesture as language.
