On this day in 1863, Henry Ford, founder of the Ford Motor Company, was born on July 30 in Michigan, USA. Born into a farming family, Ford developed a fascination with machines from a young age. At just 16, he left home for Detroit to work as a machinist. Years later, while working as an engineer, he began experimenting with gasoline-powered vehicles in his spare time.
In 1896, he completed the Quadricycle, his first successful automobile, which had four bicycle-like wheels and a small gasoline engine.
Ford officially founded the Ford Motor Company in 1903, but his biggest breakthrough came with the Model T, introduced in 1908.
His goal was not simply to build an automobile, but to create a reliable car that ordinary people could afford. The Model T became enormously popular and eventually transformed transportation in America.
Between 1908 and 1927, Ford produced around 15 million Model Ts.One of Ford’s most fascinating contributions was changing how cars were manufactured. In 1913, his factory introduced a moving assembly line for automobile production. Instead of workers building an entire car, each person performed a specific task as the vehicle moved along the line. This dramatically reduced production time and helped lower prices. Ford also raised workers’ wages to $5 a day for an eight-hour shift in 1914, a remarkable move for its time.
Ford died in 1947 at age 83, but his ideas permanently changed manufacturing, transportation, and modern industry. His story remains a powerful example of how one person’s obsession with machines helped reshape everyday life.
