Even the mess Sgt wasn’t safe. Sergeant First Class Harris – 1st Cavalry Division

On September 4, 1969, Sergeant First Class Harris, United States Army, lost his life in Bien Hoa Province, South Vietnam after becoming ill, He was serving with Headquarters Company (HHC), 1st Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division—one of the most heavily engaged American units of the war.

Though the record is brief, the weight of his service is not. As a senior noncommissioned officer, SFC Harris carried the responsibility of leadership, experience, and example for the younger soldiers under his watch. His loss would have been deeply felt by the men of the 1st Cav, who relied on leaders like him to guide them through the chaos of Vietnam.

Sergeant First Class Harris stands among the honored dead of the Vietnam War—his name remembered, his service respected, and his sacrifice never forgotten.
