We are sold out for Thursday night! Thanks everyone. It is a small space, but I do not take it for granted that people will make the effort to come out to these shows..

(I will tell you that each and every show I do, in my head I am saying, "no one is going to show up" so to have people fill up a space is all I can ask for. Thank you)

https://bit.ly/episode90 In the 37 years since women began disappearing from the streets of New Bedford, a haunting silence has lingered along the highways that surround the city. Between 1988 and 1989, eleven women vanished. Nine were eventually found along Route 140, I-195, Route 88, and nearby roads. Two remain missing. These women were vulnerable—many struggling with addiction, some involved in s*x work—all part of a community that society often chooses to ignore. Their stories deserve remembrance, not neglect.

The roadways of the south coast became grim corridors of violence where bodies were discovered near entrance ramps and wooded areas off I-195 in Dartmouth, a gravel pit off Reed Road, and in Westport, Freetown, and Marion, forming a chilling map of multiple murders, with no definitive culprit. There were many people of interest and false confessions.

Though decades apart, the New Bedford case shares disturbing parallels with the Gilgo Beach murders in Long Island. In 2023, Rex Heuermann, a 59-year-old architect from Massapequa Park, was arrested and later indicted in connection with the murders of Amber Lynn Costello, Megan Waterman, Melissa Barthelemy, Maureen Brainard-Barnes, Sandra Costilla, Jessica Taylor, and Valerie Mack- women who, like those in New Bedford, were vulnerable to violence.

In part two of my conversation with journalist and author Maureen Boyle, we delve into the suspects and people of interest in the New Bedford Highway Murders. Maureen shares insights from her years covering the case, the emotional toll on the community, and the enduring mystery of the still-unidentified killer.

The Women
Debra Medeiros, 30, from Fall River, first of the nine discovered
Nancy Paiva, 36, mother of two girls, ages 13 and 17
Debra Greenlaw Demello, 35, mother of two, disappeared from a work release program, and was trying to get into a rehabilitation.
Dawn Mendes, 25, found Nov 29, 1988, near I-195 westbound ramp in Dartmouth
Deborah Lynn McConnell, 25, from Newport, RI, found Dec 1, 1988, off Route 140 in Freetown after being reported missing 7 months earlier.
Rochelle Dopierala, 28, from Falmouth, found Dec 10, 1988, in a gravel pit off the Reed Road exit ramp.
Robin Lynn Rhodes, 29, found Mar 28, 1989, off Route 140.
Mary Rose Santos, 26, mother, found Mar 31, 1989, off Route 88 in Westport.
Sandra Botelho, 24, found Apr 24, 1989, along I-195 in Marion.
Still Missing: Christina Monteiro, 19, last seen July 1988 in New Bedford, never located or recovered.
Still Missing: Marilyn Cardoza Roberts, 34, last seen April 1988, reported missing twice by her father, a retired New Bedford police officer.

📍Concord, NH — We continue to advocate for families in New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and across New England.

It is a club no one would ever choose to join, for which no handbook is written, where feelings of isolation blur with the complexity of grief, where families are exploited for personal gain by those with questionable ethics and a lack of character, where their voices are strengthened by a community of advocates to hold them up when they tire of pleading with leaders who say they’re working quietly behind the scenes, work that has yielded very little results. 130 unsolved cases on the docket.
