I’ve always wondered about this. Same goes for Bruce Springsteen‘s “Born in the USA.“ Neither are patriotic songs! Does anyone listen to lyrics?

"Independence Day" is one of the most misunderstood songs in country music history.

Gretchen Peters wrote the song over a year and a half, and Martina McBride recorded it in 1994. The story is told through the eyes of an 8-year-old girl watching her mother suffer behind closed doors at the hands of a man who was supposed to protect them both. On the Fourth of July, the little girl goes to the county fair while her mother makes the decision to set herself and her daughter free, the only way she knows how. She burns the house down.

"Let freedom ring" was never about America. It was about one woman's fight to break free from a life that was slowly destroying her.

The song won CMA Song of the Year and Video of the Year in 1995. Rolling Stone named it one of the 100 Greatest Country Songs of All Time. Stations initially refused to play it because of the subject matter, and McBride had to personally call radio programmers to fight for airplay.

For over 30 years, people have been waving flags and line-dancing to this song on the Fourth of July without ever listening to the verses. It is one of the bravest songs ever recorded in any genre.

I had some very cool opportunities during my 40 years working in radio. A few of them stand out, such as this day back in 2012 when I got to ride along with Kyle Busch at Martinsville Speedway. RIP.
