Don’t fall for the ❄️ hype!! Tim explains below.
Snow in North Carolina next Monday?
Sure, but you'll want to be in the mountains to see some.
Just my two cents on the social media buzz.
"NORTHWEST FLOW"
- This weather pattern is what we call Northwest Flow snow in NC.
- Pretty dry and cold air moving in from our northwest. It has some moisture from the Great Lakes typically.
- These winds hit the Appalachians, the air rises, cools, condenses and you get clouds and snow showers
- For the Piedmont, the air races down the mountains, descends, warms, and evaporates.
- The Piedmont tends to stay dry in these weather setups (but not every single time)
N.C. MOUNTAINS
- Plan on very windy and cold weather Monday
- Scattered snow showers are likely
- Some accumulation will be possible, especially at the highest elevations
N.C. PIEDMONT
- It's cold! Temps in the 40s daytime
- It's windy! Gusts 25-35 mph
- It's probably dry, but a low chance of a sprinkle or two
- Snow chance is not very realistic for this setup for our areas (a few computer model runs did show some, I just don't really buy it)
- A few spits of flakes cant be ruled out completely
FUN FACTS:
- Earliest snow on record for Greensboro is November 9th, it happened with 0.8" in 1968 and 0.7" in 1971
- So, snow has happened this time of year before but it's rare and this setup isn't a good one for our area anyway.
Hope this is helpful for you!
