Protesters Decry Government’s Crackdown, Call It Suppression

A group of protesters gathered on Capitol Hill are claiming that their source of livelihood has been taken away by the current government. According to them, they were involved in the drug trade long before the Boakai administration came to power. However, they allege that since President Joseph Boakai took office, the government has been aggressively targeting their activities, making it difficult for them to continue what they describe as their “means of survival.”

The protesters argue that the government’s recent actions amount to suppression, leaving many of them without alternatives or support. While acknowledging the illegal nature of their previous trade, they insist that the sudden crackdown is unfair and has pushed them into extreme hardship.

Speaking to a group of journalists at the Capitol Hill protest grounds, they called on the government to either create economic opportunities for them or reconsider its approach to tackling illicit activity.

STAND Chairman Mulbah Morlu has described Richard Kung as an alleged criminal and issued a 14-day ultimatum to the government to respond to their petition.

“We’re giving President Boakai 14 days to respond to our petition, or else we’ll take the protest to all 15 counties,” Morlu declared as he concluded the protest.
