I thought Christmas would be calm. I was wrong.

As Father Christmas, I tried to be smart. I shared gifts like an election result. A little here, plenty there, and promises everywhere. I smiled, waved, and moved fast. At first, the animals were quiet. They watched. They counted.

Then reality landed.

The lion noticed his gift was missing.
The dog checked his share twice.
The fowl shouted loud enough for the whole village.
The rabbit ran the numbers and raised an eyebrow.

That was when it happened. They understood. The gifts were not balanced. The process was not transparent. Something was wrong.

Next thing I knew, I was running with a sack of gifts on my back, Santa hat shaking, belt fighting for its life. Behind me came justice with four legs. Lion roaring. Dog barking. Fowl shouting results. Rabbit sprinting like a returning officer with evidence.

I did not stop to explain. I knew explanations come after the chase.

Lesson learned. Whether it is gifts or votes, fairness matters. Because when those you rig against finally agree on one thing, they will come together. And they will run very fast.

Christmas remains sweet, but accountability runs faster.

The first time I ever saw Santa, I knew him only as Father Christmas. As a small child, it never crossed my mind that it was acting. To us, it was real life. The red clothes, the big stomach, the white beard, everything looked serious.

Some children started crying immediately. Others were jumping with joy, shouting his name as if they knew him personally. I stood there confused but curious.

Then the questions began. Children asked things no adult would dare ask.
“How old are you?”
“Who is your father?”
“Where is your house?”
“Do you sleep in the sky?”
“Why is your stomach bigger than my daddy’s?”
“Where are your children?”
“Do you eat rice or just biscuits?”

Father Christmas answered some with confidence and wisdom. For others, he laughed, cleared his throat, and quickly changed the topic. When one child asked why his beard did not move in the wind, he said the wind was afraid of him.

When it was time for gifts, fear disappeared. Crying stopped. Smiles returned. Even the bravest child suddenly behaved well. We collected our gifts like precious treasures and walked home proudly, telling our parents that we met the real Father Christmas.

Years later, I understood it was just a costume. But the lesson stayed. Joy is powerful. Kindness creates memories. And sometimes, belief is more important than facts.

May this season remind us to laugh, share, and keep a little childlike wonder in our hearts.
