Van Aert Blazes to Champs-Élysées Victory as Pogačar Seals Fourth Tour de Title!

Paris, France – July 27, 2025 – The 112th edition of the Tour de France culminated today in a thrilling Stage 21 on the iconic Champs-Élysées, with a surprising and spectacular solo victory from Wout van Aert (Team Visma | Lease a Bike).

The Belgian powerhouse launched a decisive attack on the challenging Côte de la Butte Montmartre, dropping even the formidable Tadej Pogačar, to claim his second career stage win on cycling's most famous avenue.

The final 132.3 km stage from Mantes-la-Ville to Paris was anything but a ceremonial ride. Organizers, celebrating 50 years of Tour finishes on the Champs-Élysées, added three ascents of the steep Montmartre climb, transforming the traditional sprint finish into a tactical masterpiece.

Rain in Paris earlier in the day led to a neutralization of the general classification on the fourth crossing of the finish line, just before the first Montmartre climb, setting the stage for a daring finale.

Van Aert's incredible solo effort saw him cross the line 19 seconds ahead of the chasing group, which included Davide Ballerini (XDS Astana) in second and Matej Mohorič (Bahrain Victorious) in third.

Notably, Biniam Girmay (Intermarché-Wanty), who had a challenging Tour marked by a significant crash in Stage 17, managed to finish 13th on the stage, a commendable effort considering his earlier misfortunes.

While he wasn't contesting for the stage win, his presence in the mix on the Champs-Élysées demonstrates his resilience and determination after what could have been a Tour-ending incident.
While the stage belonged to Van Aert, the overall glory unequivocally went to Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates-XRG).

The Slovenian superstar cemented his place in cycling history by securing his fourth Tour de France Yellow Jersey, a dominant performance that saw him maintain a commanding lead throughout the race. Pogačar’s consistent excellence and ability to respond to every challenge from his rivals, most notably Jonas Vingegaard, showcased why he is considered one of the greatest of his generation.

Here's a breakdown of the final jersey standings:

💛 Yellow Jersey (General Classification):

Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates-XRG)
Pogačar finishes the Tour with a comfortable lead of 4 minutes and 24 seconds over his closest rival, Jonas Vingegaard (Team Visma | Lease a Bike). Florian Lipowitz (Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe) rounded out the podium in third.

💚 Green Jersey (Points Classification): Jonathan Milan (Lidl–Trek)

Despite Van Aert's stage win, Jonathan Milan had already secured a commanding lead in the points classification, a testament to his consistent sprint performances throughout the three weeks.

Biniam Girmay, the reigning Green Jersey winner from last year's Tour, put up a brave fight but ultimately finished third in this classification. His strong start to the Tour, including a second-place finish on Stage 1, showed his intent, but a challenging latter half of the race, including the crash in Stage 17, made defending his title a bridge too far.

⛰️ Polka Dot Jersey (Mountains Classification): Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates-XRG)

A double triumph for Pogačar, who also clinches the Polka Dot Jersey, showcasing his prowess on the demanding climbs of this year's Tour.

⚪ White Jersey (Young Rider Classification): Florian Lipowitz (Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe)

The German sensation Florian Lipowitz, making his Tour de France debut, claimed the White Jersey for the best young rider, a promising sign for the future of cycling.

What a Tour de France it has been!
Congratulations to all the riders for their incredible effort and sportsmanship. The 2025 Tour will be remembered for its thrilling stages, dramatic moments, and the crowning of a true champion in Tadej Pogačar, along with the inspiring resilience of riders like Biniam Girmay.

🛑 The Road Less Traveled: Abiy Ahmed's Challenges with Ethnic Polarization and Regional Ties 🇪🇹,

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's rise brought immense hope for reform and unity in Ethiopia. While he earned a Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts, the journey has been fraught with significant challenges, particularly regarding the country's complex ethnic landscape and its relationships with neighbors.

Many observers point to several critical areas where his policies have faced criticism:

● Navigating Ethnic Federalism: Ethiopia's constitution is built on ethnic federalism, granting regions significant autonomy. Critics argue that Abiy's vision of "Medemer" (synergy/unity) and the formation of the Prosperity Party aimed at centralizing power, rather than democratizing the existing multi-national federalism. This approach has been perceived by some as undermining the gains of ethnic self-rule and has arguably exacerbated ethno-nationalist tensions, leading to increased polarization and conflict, notably in Tigray, Amhara, and Oromia.

● Exacerbating Internal Divisions: Despite initial optimism, the period under Abiy has seen a deepening of internal divisions. While he sought to unify, many ethnic groups, including some Oromos (his own ethnic group) and Amharas, have felt their interests neglected or actively suppressed. The perception that his administration has prioritized the dominance of one group or sought to manage ethnic rivalries for political advantage has fueled resentment and further unrest.

● Strained Neighborly Relations: Abiy's foreign policy has also drawn scrutiny. While initially lauded for peace with Eritrea, tensions have since re-emerged, particularly concerning Ethiopia's declared "existential" need for sea access. This rhetoric, coupled with the controversial Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Somaliland, has strained relations with Somalia and raised fears of regional instability.

Furthermore, ongoing disputes over the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) continue to challenge ties with Sudan and Egypt. Critics suggest that a personalization and de-institutionalization of foreign policy have led to diplomatic miscalculations.

The path to a stable and prosperous Ethiopia requires nuanced approaches to its diverse identities and careful diplomacy with its neighbors. The ongoing challenges highlight the complexities of governing a multi-ethnic nation in a volatile region.

📢 TOUR DE 🇫🇷 STAGE 17: 🇮🇹 POWERS THROUGH CHAOS, 🇪🇷 CRASHES OUT OF CONTENTION IN RAIN-SOAKED FINISH! 🚴‍♂️💥

Valence, France – What was anticipated to be a straightforward sprint stage turned into a dramatic and chaotic affair today in the Tour de France, as Jonathan Milan (Lidl-Trek) claimed a hard-fought victory on a rain-slicked Stage 17.

However, the day's headlines were also marred by a high-speed crash in the final kilometer that saw several prominent sprinters, including Eritrea's Biniam Ghirmay (Intermarché-Wanty), go down.
As the peloton hurtled towards the finish line in Valence, aiming for a mass sprint, the already tense atmosphere was amplified by increasingly wet roads. With just over a kilometer remaining, disaster struck as a large crash engulfed riders at the front of the bunch.

Amongst those caught in the pile-up was fan-favorite Biniam Ghirmay, who had been positioning himself for a strong finish. Reports indicate he crossed the line holding one hand off his bars, pointing to a possible fracture, though the full extent of his injuries is yet to be confirmed.

Despite the carnage around him, the powerful Italian Jonathan Milan expertly navigated the slippery conditions, launching a blistering sprint to take his second stage win of this year's Tour. Jordi Meeus (Red Bull-Bora-hansgrohe) and Tobias Lund Andresen (Picnic-PostNl) rounded out the podium.

The General Classification contenders, including yellow jersey holder Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) and his closest rival Jonas Vingegaard (Visma | Lease a Bike), managed to avoid the late crash and crossed the line safely within the same time, meaning Pogačar retains his commanding lead of 4 minutes and 15 seconds.

Today's 160.4km stage from Bollène to Valence was expected to be a final opportunity for the pure sprinters before the Alps, but the treacherous conditions turned it into a battle of attrition and nerve. We wish Biniam Ghirmay and all other riders involved in the crash a swift and full recovery.

Stay tuned for more updates as the Tour de France heads into the demanding final mountain stages!
