Cats played a role on Navy and Coast Guard vessels at one point in history. In 1943, Herman the cat would officially be commissioned by the military as an “Expert Mouser.” His primary duty was to control and extirpate the rodent population aboard the vessel. Like other Coast Guard members, Herman was issued an identification card for his hometown in Baltimore.

Yesterday, the U.S. Coast Guard proudly commissioned the Storis (WAGB 21) in Juneau, Alaska! This historic moment immediately strengthens our ability to control, secure, and defend the U.S. border around Alaska and maritime approaches in the Arctic. Continuing our return on America’s historic investment in the Coast Guard, Storis will add critical capacity to our polar icebreaker fleet to protect U.S. sovereignty and counter malign influence throughout the Arctic.

The Storis is more than a ship. As our first polar icebreaker in over 25 years, Storis honors the legacy of the original "Galloping Ghost of the Alaskan Coast" while paving the way for a stronger, more secure Arctic presence. With enhanced capabilities and a dedicated crew, this vessel will protect U.S. sovereignty, secure vital Arctic access, and safeguard our nation’s interests in this critical region.

We are honored to serve as guardians of the Arctic and defenders of our homeland. Semper Paratus!
