His unit, as part of Operation Montgomery Rendezvous, was engaged in a search-and-clear mission in Thua Thien Province, aimed at eliminating North Vietnamese Army forces from the area. The operation was a part of the larger efforts to stabilize the region and push back communist forces.

As Roberts’ platoon advanced along a narrow ridgeline, a neighboring unit came under heavy fire from an entrenched North Vietnamese position. The platoon’s mission shifted to providing support, moving through difficult terrain under the threat of enemy ambushes.
