Elephants sometimes put their trunks near another elephant’s a**s and may even eat some of their f***s. This behavior is called coprophagy, and it serves important biological purposes. By smelling and tasting dung, elephants gather information about the other animal’s health, diet, hormonal state, and even reproductive condition. F***s contain chemical signals and pheromones that help them understand if a female is in estrus or if another elephant is stressed or sick.

Young elephants may also eat the dung of adults to introduce beneficial bacteria into their digestive system. These microbes help them properly digest plant material as they grow.

Although it may seem strange to humans, this behavior is completely natural and plays a key role in elephant communication, health, and social bonding.
