My neighbor was literally dragging this old dresser to the curb last week. Like, literally dragging it. The thing was beat up, missing a drawer pull, and honestly looked like it belonged in a haunted house. But something about those vintage lines just spoke to me, you know? So I did what any rational person would do... I knocked on her door at 8 PM and asked if I could have it.
She looked at me like I'd lost my mind. "Honey, that thing is falling apart."
"That's okay!" I said, already planning in my head. "I have ideas."
Famous last words, right?
So I get this thing home and my husband's like "what exactly are you planning to do with that?" And honestly? I had no clue. I just knew it didn't belong in a landfill.
I spent two days just staring at it in the garage. Moving around it, sitting on the floor next to it, trying to figure out what it wanted to become. Then it hit me - what if the bottom drawers became the seat base, and I built a backrest where the top used to be?
But here's where it gets interesting. I needed cushions that would actually fit this weird creation, and regular store-bought stuff wasn't gonna cut it. That's when I remembered this woman I'd connected with on the Tedooo app who does custom upholstery work. I'd bought some throw pillows from her shop before and loved her fabric choices.
I sent her the measurements and she was like "girl, what exactly are you building?" When I explained the whole dresser-to-chair situation, she got SO excited. She said she'd been wanting to work on something totally unique like this. She ended up making these gorgeous cushions with this dreamy circular pattern that somehow makes the whole thing look intentional instead of... well, insane.
The ottoman was actually my husband's idea. He saw me struggling to figure out what to do with that random middle drawer and just casually said "why don't you make it into a footrest?" Sometimes I forget how smart that man is.
I painted everything in this gorgeous turquoise color I've been obsessed with lately, and honestly... I can't believe this is the same piece of furniture that was headed for the trash.
Now it sits in my reading corner and I swear it's the most comfortable chair in the house. My daughter keeps stealing it to do homework, and even my skeptical husband has admitted it's "actually pretty cool."
