COMMENTARY: Giving thanks this Chanukah | Camarillo Acorn

Aside from taking place around the same time of year, there doesn’t seem to be much common ground between a holiday commemorating the pilgrims who landed on these shores and one commemorating the victory of the Jewish people over their Syrian-Greek oppressors some 2,000 years ago. Potato latkes and turkey don’t seem to go together.

But in truth, the two holidays share much in common.

As we prepare for this year's Chanukah festival on Nov. 28 at Constitution Park, steps away from City Hall, I'm naturally reminded of the other holiday that will take place during the weeken

Traditional neighborhood polling places are fading into history for Ventura County elections. That’s because county election officials are transitioning to a new voting model under California’s Voter’s Choice Act in time for next June’s election. Carrying on the Story of the Chumash - Branching Out with The Acorn Newspapers

November is not just about Thanksgiving: It's also Native American Heritage Month.

And while most of us are aware that we are sitting on ancestral Chumash lands, all too often we refer to Chumash or Native culture in the past tense-- which is wildly incorrect.

This week's Branching Out guest, Beverly Folkes, is living proof of that. Beverly is of Chumash and Tataviam descent and sits on the board of directors for the Chumash Indian Museum, as well as the Sacred Sites Committee for the Department of Energy and the Council of Elders for the Fernandeño Tataviam Band of Mission Indians.

Acorn reporter Dawn Megli sits down with Beverly Salazar Folkes, a Chumash and Tataviam elder and chairperson on the board of the Chumash Indian Museum in Thousand Oaks, to learn about local indigenous cultures and her own personal story.
