As a therapist conducting thousands of EMDR sessions, I've witnessed countless transformations, but none quite as profound as the shift from restrictive to expansive love.

This shift is a universal theme that emerges in every single EMDR session I facilitate, emphasizing its fundamental importance in our emotional well-being.

I remember when I first started this journey myself, as a client of EMDR. The idea of letting go of the rigid rules I'd learned about love and worthiness felt really scary.

This fear is something I see reflected in my clients' eyes during our EMDR work, as we begin to challenge deeply ingrained patterns.

What if I become selfish? What if I lose control?

These were the questions that haunted me then, and I hear them echoed in session after session with clients as we work through the EMDR process.

But the truth is, while there's something scary about that change, the other side is pretty amazing. This is what I strive to help my clients discover through EMDR therapy.

When we dare to love ourselves expansively, we open up a world of authenticity and joy. We learn to trust our instincts, honor our feelings, and embrace our quirks.

This is the essence of the work we do in EMDR—reprogramming our minds to embrace a more expansive, authentic way of being.

This journey ripples out into every relationship we have. In EMDR sessions, we often see how this shift toward expansive self-love transforms not only the individual but their entire relational landscape.

It’s a beautiful thing to watch.

Yes, it's scary to challenge the restrictive love patterns we've known all our lives. But I promise you, the view from the other side is beautiful. This is what keeps me passionate about EMDR therapy—witnessing this transformation session after session.

It's a place where we can truly know ourselves, trust ourselves, and love ourselves just as we are. This is the ultimate goal of our EMDR work—to help each person find this place of expansive self-love.

Whether you're considering EMDR therapy or simply exploring the concept of expansive love, know that this journey, while challenging, holds the potential for profound personal transformation. Think about depression first as a pendulum swinging back from anxiety. Often anxiety is a cadence that lives inside our body, a cadence that’s so fast and normalized that we don’t even realize how quickly we’re moving. And eventually we crash.

And then, we swing the other way back to anxiety. Back and forth as we respond to the world around us.

Feels a bit overwhelming, right? To never feel the normalcy of stillness.

Constant movement at a high cadence is a pretty typical occurrence in the U.S. We’re conditioned to go…go…go…at work, at home, for our families, that we’re really in a constant state of anxiety. And when we stop or try to slow down, we crash.

That crash, or collapse, is the pendulum swinging back, making us feel depressed. We go from hyperarousal, where we’re stuck in anxiety, sleeplessness, and even rage to hypoarousal, where we’re stuck in disconnection, fatigue, and exhaustion--from one extreme to another.

We’ve all seen the messages about getting over trauma, feeling happier, being more productive, and managing our feelings, right?

Here's the deal: First, it's tough to tackle big challenges alone. Second, what works for one person might not work for the next.

If you're in therapy and feel like you're not getting what you want out of it, there are things you can do on your own (or with your therapist) to see better results, faster.

And if you're a therapist, it's totally cool to use resources outside of your training. As long as you educate yourself. (Though I recommend training, especially in brain-based modalities.)

If you’ve ever been told you have generalized anxiety disorder or you’re an anxious person, you may have sought out talk therapy or even medication to help you with this. Oftentimes therapists and physicians don’t see a connection between anxiety and trauma, likely because the American Psychological Association and the DSM’s definition of trauma is way too narrow.

The reality is that most people have experienced trauma and the feeling of anxiety is incredibly common. Feeling anxiety is normal! And EMDR is an amazing tool for recalibrating your relationship with the feeling of anxiety.

This week on the podcast I’m resharing one of our most popular episodes, where I talk more about what trauma actually is, and why the feeling of anxiety falls under this umbrella. I’m also sharing how EMDR brings everything we know about therapy into one modality and allows us to connect with parts of ourselves that hold anxiety so we can begin to heal.
