Captain's Log:

21 December, in the year of CW 2025.

Preparations went well for the CWRR contest. Time was set aside, station was prepped, and everything went well. Keeping my eye on the Contest scoreboard provided that urgency and drive, but the QSOs never flowed as strongly and quickly as expected. Spent most of the time running, hoping, praying for Samuel Morse himself to bless my radio and bring me a higher rate then 14/hr.

It was not to be.

A lot of QSB prevented more distant contacts and I was unable to hear anyone west of the Mississippi River, and DX was rarely heard, and when they did respond, they didn't know the exchange.

Overall, it was a good contest, but I have a few complaints. One being that we do a complicated exchange that (in a lot of cases) required more then basic CW skills and one might say delved into advanced/expert conversational CW for a contest most didn't know was happening, or even knew existed. In the end when the scores are submitted, there is no ask for a Cabrillo log, no verification of exchanges... why? If that's the expectation then to make this contest more "Rookie" friendly, it should be an easy exchange like 599 and state or something along those lines. It seems like a lot of input for nothing.

Alas, it is what it is. I wish my shack in the basement was warmer then the 50 degrees (No amplifier running to keep me warm during the long hours of CQ'ing) yet I shall return upstairs to my fire and commence running FT8 remotely from my office PC.

Until next time, NV1U signing off.

Probably the worst wind storm in CT in a while. We had trees falling across powerlines, power outages, and meanwhile, I was doing my part as a lineman... putting up line, man, in the trees!

80m OCFD makes a huge difference. Whether it's rain, sleet, snow or hail, we're delivering QSOs!

A little snow doesn't stop me, not even in New Hampshire at Fort Stark State Historic Site, US-8019!

But new RG8X coax, and an antenna I don't use as much slowed me down for sure. Got 15 in the log but man was it a struggle. Not sure if it was because of how early I activated, but 20m seemed dead, and even 40m got no response, and I had to hunt and QSY several times.

Next time i'm bringing the laptop to run FT8 for mornings like this.

Look, i'm told the thermometer read 28, with windchills to 19.
.. too bad I can't read, and I ignored the fact that there's ice on the river here. Oh well. A little lunch break POTA, 50 QSOs, 49 after dupes, and retook my #2 spot at Stoddard Hill State Park US-6873 from N0TAR. Wanted more QSOs but couldnt feel my hands and had to get back to work.

If this what winter POTA is going to be like from here to the end of the season, I'm going to need more hand warmers and thicker gloves.

Forgot to post a map of the range we achieved with the last activation I did!

Thanks goes out to the 2 YL ops with me, Liberty as KJ5NBM and Sydney as K1SSN!

All joking aside, getting out to POTA in these cold temps (It's 5 degrees this morning) is hard.

Always nice to get a new shack online!

KC1WAI is rocking an Astron RS-50M AP, Icom 7610, Icom SP38 External Speaker, PALSTAR HF-AUTO, Icom 9700, and an Icom PW2!

That's full duplex VHF/UHF capabilities, HF and 6m up to 1kW!

Next up will be making it remote capable, and it might become the place I contest from!
