I am excited to announce that I am the recipient of a 2019 Multimedia Award from the NC Society of Historians for the "Sunburst" DVD. This is the 3rd multimedia award I have received. All of them were for videos that I shot and edited for the Bethel Rural Community Organization. For "Sunburst," I also wrote the narration, which was read by Craig S. Messer. Evelyn Coltman, who served as a producer on the project, and the BRCO Historic Preservation Committee also received awards.

Willow Hill Soap Company

Check out this video I made for Willow Hill Soap Company announcing their new storefront in Canton!

Papertown.
Milltown.
Hometown.

Many years ago our great-grandfathers moved to Canton from Tenessee and Georgia to make better lives for their families. They worked in the paper mill for a good wage that was less than $0.50 an hour. They settled in the community to raise their children, worship God in the local churches, and be part of the Canton area communities that loved and cared about their neighbor.
All four of our grandfathers also worked in the paper mill and raised their families here.
Both of our daddies worked for the mill and each retired with over 43 years of service.
The money earned in the paper mill has paid for our houses, paid our tithes and offerings for our churches, and invested in the building of Canton and the community.

It is with hometown pride that we are announcing that we will be opening a Willow Hill Soap Company storefront in downtown Canton. You will be able to find us this winter in what was formerly known as Martin’s Drug Store.

We know that our grandparent and great- grandparent would be so excited to see that our little family owned Willow Hill Soap Company is part of the #CantonComeback!

The Sunburst DVD was supposed to be available yesterday (12/12), but, as many of you know, the weather has not been kind to Western North Carolina the last few days. The DVDs are on their way to BRCO, but the shipment has been delayed twice now, and is currently hanging around in Greensboro. As soon as the DVDs arrive, BRCO will start getting them shipped out or delivered to everyone who ordered.

"Sunburst" Trailer

A little over five years ago, the first interviews for "Sunburst" were recorded, and now, at last, the documentary is finished! The DVD is officially titled "Sunburst and Other Logging Operations in the Bethel & Cold Mountain Region," and it will be available for purchase in mid-December.

The main feature is the two-hour documentary which covers the history of the Sunburst logging village in the mountains of Haywood County, North Carolina, which was located where Lake Logan can be found today. The DVD also includes features on the logging industry in Bethel before and after Sunburst existed.

The DVD is produced by the Bethel Rural Community Organization (www.bethelrural.org) and can be ordered directly from BRCO at: http://www.bethelrural.org/Historic-Preservation/sunburst-and-other-logging-operations.html

This has been a long time coming, but it's finally getting close! The first interviews for "Sunburst," a documentary about the logging village of that name, were recorded in October of 2013. Now all of the interviews, footage, and a ton of old photos are finally coming together. There are quite a few things left to do, so the release date is still up in the air for now, but it won't be long! Watch for a trailer to be posted within the next couple of weeks!

If you like bluegrass music, check out this CD of local group "Possum On A Whale" that I produced with Bethel Rural Community Organization. There are 13 tracks on the CD, totaling over 30 minutes of music. Some of the music will appear in an upcoming DVD about Sunburst and the logging industry in Bethel. The CD is available at: http://www.bethelrural.org/Historic-Preservation/possum-on-a-whale-cd.html

Bethel Rural Community Organization (BRCO) has partnered with a youth-oriented musical group to produce a music CD. Possum on a Whale is an old-time band from Western North Carolina that features Appalachian music played in the traditional style that has characterized the region for generations. The group consists of middle school, high school, and college students. Possum on a Whale has frequented festivals since 2013 and is a popular attraction at every venue. “Sunburst Sessions” is the first CD for the group and is produced by Douglas Chambers Productions under the direction of BRCO’s Historic Preservation Committee. BRCO’s website www.bethelrural.org provides access to the CD trailer. Sunburst Sessions CD is also available at Blue Ridge Books or from members of Possum on a Whale. Possum on a Whale has also been selected by BRCO to provide background music for its upcoming Sunburst and Other Logging Villages in Bethel DVD that will be completed by May of 2018. This DVD, a four year production project, will consist of more than a dozen interviews about a diverse array of topics concerning historic logging communities that played a role in the development of paper production, hardwood timbering, and forestry management in Western North Carolina. The North Carolina Society of Historians has awarded BRCO’s Historic Preservation Committee and individual members with state history awards for Legends, Tales & History of Cold Mountain, Books 1 – 6, Walking in the Footsteps of Those Who Came Before Us DVD, and From New College to Springdale DVD – all collections about Bethel and Haywood County history. Douglas Chambers Production has also received state history awards for his videography.

From Bethel to Brooklyn: Reaching Park Slope - Riverside Baptist Church

Here's a video I finished back in January that i'm just now getting around to sharing on Facebook. This covers Riverside Baptist Church's December mission trip to the Big Apple (aka New York City, of course). It was shot mostly in the Park Slope area of Brooklyn, and features Park Slope Community Church, a church that hosts mission teams from all over the country...and sometimes even outside the country.

West Virginia Missions - Vacation Bible School at Horse Creek Church

This one has been online for a while, unlisted, so I figured it's time to share it. I didn't know when I went to West Virginia to document a mission trip in March that I would end up doing a whole series of West Virginia Missions videos. This is the 2nd video (of 4) for 2013, which documents RBC's biggest trip to West Virginia this year.

Helping People in Need in West Virginia - Riverside Baptist Church

Last month, I was fortunate to get to go on a trip with several members of Riverside Baptist Church to deliver donated furniture, clothing, and food to a small town in West Virginia. I shot and edited this video to show the rest of the church where their donations were going and who they were helping.

One of the toughest things about putting together any audio or video project is making sure it fits within a specific amount of time. My current problem: figuring out where to cut almost 6 minutes of audio for a self-guided tour CD so it will fit on a single disc.
