After 13 years of service to the city of Raleigh, NC, police horse Willow is hanging up her bridle. The Percheron mare joined the mounted unit in 2012 after a career as a broodmare and quickly became a trusted partner to her fellow officers. Beloved by both colleagues and community, Willow has more than earned her retirement. Please join WARHorses in wishing her the happiest of days ahead.

Once a cornerstone of rural life, horse pulling is a fading tradition — but for the families who still hitch their teams, it’s more than competition. It’s about heritage, pride, and caring for these beloved working horses.

BANGOR, Wis. (WKBT) -- Horse pulling is a sport that's been around for generations, with many being 3rd or 4th generation horse pullers.

For two years, a determined 64-year-old Colorado woman has devoted her heart and time to one wild mustang living alone along the Arkansas River. With little help, she’s patiently earning his trust in hopes of guiding him to safety and a new life at sanctuary.

“I never expected to make friends with a wild horse,” said Carol Stires. She drives from her house in Cañon City to spend time with River, whose future on BLM land is threatened.

Setting goals for you and your horse is an important part of building progress, confidence, and connection. Goals don’t have to be grand—sometimes the smallest milestones, like standing quietly for grooming or taking a calm trail ride, are the most meaningful. Putting effort into even modest objectives helps create consistency and a sense of purpose in your work together. And once a goal is accomplished, taking the time to acknowledge and celebrate it—no matter how small—reinforces both your growth and your horse’s, making the journey as rewarding as the achievement itself.

As summer winds down on Chincoteague Island, the famous wild ponies continue to make history — the record breaking 102nd foal of the year has arrived, but with a twist.
Last week the newborn was spotted with a mare named Marsh Mallow, but she couldn’t be the mother — she’d already given birth earlier this year. Concerned for the foal’s health, the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Co. (CVFC) stepped in and captured the youngster to ensure it received proper nourishment.
The mystery of the missing mom soon unraveled: clues pointed to Fancy Free, a maiden mare who likely wandered off while her baby was napping.
Foal #102 is now safe, thriving under the care of nurse mare EJ at a local farm. 🥰

In a shocking crime, a horse thief stole a Shetland foal from her mother and vanished. For a month the tiny foal, Lucy, was missing—until British police, tipped off anonymously, tracked her to a caravan (RV) park. Now back in her mother’s care, Lucy is expected to fully recover. As for the thief? There’s a special place in hell…

Lucy was stolen from Cornwall and found in a Hertfordshire caravan park five weeks later.

A ray of hope shines through a tragic story near Virginia Beach, VA. Earlier this year, nearly two dozen horses were seized from a heartbreaking case of neglect, their two owners now facing 96 charges.
Most of the horses found safety at Circle A Home for Horses, a rescue with years of experience—yet even they were shaken by the animals’ desperate condition. Among them was Gandalf, a 31-year-old senior whose survival seemed uncertain.
But against all odds, Gandalf and the others are still here, healing day by day. Their recovery is slow but steady, and the future now holds the promise of permanent, loving homes. ❤️

Caught in the act! Despite having a freshly filled hay bag in his stall, Gandalf prefers to sample the hay in the bucket.

Total strangers didn’t hesitate when the call went out—more than a hundred arrived to help evacuate horses from an approaching fire. Horse folk doing what good horse folk do - helping others! 🥰

Meredith Smith put a call out on Facebook for help evacuate her 11 horses and seven pigs when a fire broke out at a neighbour’s property. Her community responded faster than she ever expected.

We WARHorses—Women of Age—know that growing old isn’t for the faint of heart. Our bodies get a little creaky, a little sore, and sometimes downright uncooperative. The same holds true for our aging horses. One issue that often sneaks up on them is dental trouble, like EORTH, a painful condition that affects their incisors. Here’s a simple, in-the-field test to help spot it—and yet another good reason to offer your horse a carrot.
Thank you AAEP for this helpful information!

As silly as it sounds, the "carrot test" can be used to help diagnose tooth aches in our equine companions.

Equine odontoclastic tooth resorption and hypercementosis (EORTH) is a dental condition that affects the incisors of middle-aged horses and older. As the name suggests, it acts by both resorbing the teeth and then producing large amounts of cementum (a hard substance that anchors the teeth into place).

Clinical signs such as difficulty chewing, teeth discoloration and painful gums are highly suspicious for this disease, but you can also offer your horse a carrot to assess how comfortable they are biting down. If it seems painful for them while biting the carrot, they could have EORTH!

Your veterinarian can do an oral examination and take dental radiographs to confirm the diagnosis. This is a progressive disease so there is no cure, but there are management strategies that can improve their comfort.

If you are concerned that your horse may have EORTH or is experiencing oral pain, contact your veterinarian so that they may further evaluate and suggest treatment options.

Thank you to the Horse Owner Education Committee for providing this information.
