Tonight's special guest is Michealene Risley. Michealene is the founder and CEO of Imbibe, a U.S.-based sleep company focused on one thing: helping people actually feel better when they wake up. Imbibe makes pillows that use copper, silver, and cooling technology to support alignment, ease pain, and make sleep more comfortable and restorative.

Before starting Imbibe, she spent years building and growing brands in sports, apparel, and gaming. She helped build Adidas maternity as a licensee program, creating product for pregnant athletes and active women at a time when that customer was mostly overlooked. In video games, she worked on both the Tiger Woods and Sonic the Hedgehog franchises as gaming properties, which went on to become billion-dollar global businesses. Those experiences taught her how to listen closely to what people actually need and then turn that into products and stories they want to come back to.

Imbibe is that skill set pointed at sleep. From the beginning, she designed the company around a simple idea: a pillow is personal. Because of that, Imbibe offers one of the strongest return policies in the category and treats each customer as a relationship, not just an order number. She and her team pay close attention to what customers report back: less shoulder pain, better neck alignment, fewer issues with borderline sleep apnea, and deeper sleep. That feedback shapes how the product continues to evolve.

Imbibe pillows have ended up in the hands of Grammy winners, celebrities, and professional athletes, including NFL player Carl Lawson and U.S. Olympic athlete Rachel Dincoff, along with plenty of people who will never be on a stage or a field but simply want to sleep without hurting.

Alongside her work as a founder, Michealene is a longtime human rights activist. She brings that perspective into how she builds her company: prioritizing integrity, aiming to keep as much of the process in the United States as possible, and looking ahead to a national impact partner so that every pillow sold can also support a larger cause.

Across her career, whether in sports, gaming, or sleep, the throughline is the same: use good design and honest business to make everyday life a little more humane.

Tonight's special guest is Etienne Charles. Trinidad born Etienne Charles is a performer, composer and storyteller, who is continuously searching for untold stories and sounds with which to tell them.

His lush trumpet sound, varied compositional textures and pulsating percussive grooves enable him to invoke trance, soothing and exciting listeners while referencing touchy and sometimes controversial subjects in his music.

A 2015 Guggenheim Fellow and 2022 Creative Capital Awardee, he researches his compositions by travelling to the regions on which he is focused, meeting with musicians and cultural leaders then observing and participating in rituals to be fully immersed into the cultures that he is studying.

As an Afro-descendant, his work is actively connecting the diaspora and drawing lines to regions at the roots of migrations. Highlighting marginalized communities and engaging with them has been his mission, evident with projects such as Carnival: The Sound of a People Vol. 1, San Jose Suite, Creole Soul, and Folklore.

A firm believer in music and performance as a tool for provoking thought and dialogue, Charles’ themes speak to the status quo while drawing parallels to history. With his latest commissioned project, San Juan Hill, he goes a step further by exploring the storied New York neighborhood to bring the culture of San Juan Hill to the mainstage.

His concerts engage, enlighten, educate and enrich audiences with energized multidisciplinary performance utilizing original composition, thematic improvisation, dance, short films and spoken word to create a holistic experience.

In June 2012, he was written into the US Congressional Record for his musical contributions to Trinidad & Tobago and the World. In 2013, his album Creole Soul reached #1 for three weeks on the Jazzweek chart and was eventually named #3 Jazz Album of the year by Jazzweek. Also in 2013 he received the Caribbean Heritage Trailblazer award from the Institute of Caribbean Studies (Washington, DC). In 2016 he was the recipient of the Michigan State University Teacher Scholar Award, the Jazz at Lincoln Center Millennial Swing award and was a featured panelist and performer at the White House for a Caribbean Heritage Month Briefing. He made his debut as producer and songwriter on the album Petite Afrique by Somi (Sony/Okeh 2017) which won Outstanding Jazz Album at the 2018 NAACP Image Awards.

His dedication to the preservation of artistic traditions in his homeland inspired him to form and lead the Carnival bands, "We the People" (2017), "Street Party" (2018), "D'longtime Band" (2019) and "Euphoria" (2020) which featured a full live brass band on a truck going through the streets of Woodbrook and Port of Spain playing vintage calypso and soca.

Understanding his role as Artist citizen, he sees live music as a way to uplift all peoples and is dedicated to bringing it to those who aren’t able to attend concerts. Specifically, in his homeland of Trinidad and Tobago, he has done performances and workshops at Princess Elizabeth Center, St. Dominic’s children’s home, St. Mary’s children’s home, St. Jude’s school for girls, St. Michael’s school for boys, St. Margaret’s school for boys, Youth Training Center and Maximum Security Prison.

He currently serves as Associate Professor of Studio Music and Jazz at the University of Miami, Patricia L. Frost School of Music.

Your host, Dion Parson, is an educator, composer, Grammy Award-winning performer, and bandleader. He currently resides on the island of St. Thomas and serves as the Chair of the Communication and Performing Arts Department at the University of the Virgin Islands. Honoring Heritage and Family Legacy
This week's special guest is Bill Haley, Jr. Maya Angelou, the renowned poet and actress who portrayed Kunta Kinteh’s grandmother Yaisa in the 1977 miniseries Roots, once said, “You can’t really know where you are going until you know where you have been.” This sentiment captures the spirit that Bill Haley, Jr.—grandson of Alex Haley—has dedicated himself to upholding, applying the powerful lessons of family, culture, and heritage from Roots to the 21st century.

As a young boy, Bill Haley, Jr. was among the 100 million viewers captivated by Roots’ sobering depiction of slavery and the perseverance of his ninth generation ancestor, Kunta Kinteh, who fought to ensure the oral history and legacy of his life would be passed down to future generations. Witnessing his family’s oral history come to life on television over eight consecutive nights was

an unforgettable experience, filled with both pride and apprehension. Born in New York City during Black History Month (February 3rd), Bill Jr., then a shy twelve-year-old and grandson of the “world famous” author of Roots, was initially overwhelmed by the sudden attention, excitement, and curiosity about Roots, his grandfather, and his African ancestors: Kunta Kinteh, Kizzy, and Chicken George. Over time, he adapted to this new reality and embraced the responsibility that came with being associated with Alex Haley.

Learning from a Master Storyteller
Alex Haley was known for his remarkable storytelling abilities. Bill Jr. would eagerly listen to his grandfather recount the thrilling twelve-year search to uncover the family’s African heritage. It was during one of these moments that Bill first met Ebou Manga—a Gambian, son of Malick Manga, and Alex’s lifelong friend—who played a crucial role in translating the African words from the family’s oral history, preserved through seven generations. Ebou Manga was also instrumental in taking Alex Haley to The Gambia for the first time, which ultimately led to the discovery of Kunta Kinteh’s descendants in the village of Juffureh.
The Global Impact of Roots

Roots became one of the world’s most significant social phenomena, inspiring families around the globe to trace their own origins. Alex Haley became a tireless ambassador, traveling and speaking worldwide, encouraging people to seek, discover, and celebrate their ancestral heritage. After Alex Haley’s untimely death in 1992, his son Bill Haley, Sr. and grandson Bill Haley, Jr. honored his legacy two years later by partnering with McDonald’s to sponsor the Haley Family’s Adventure to the Homeland—a week-long tour to Kunta Kinteh’s ancestral village of Juffureh, greater Gambia, and Senegal.

Bill Jr. continued to honor his Kinteh ancestor and grandfather by returning to The Gambia for the International Roots Festival in 2016 and again in early 2023 with Malick Manga to celebrate seven major Roots-related anniversaries. He also introduced five technology transfer initiatives focused on Sustainable Housing, Education, Healthcare, Agriculture and Cultural Tourism to benefit the people of The Gambia.
Preserving the Magic: New Initiatives

Inspired by the upcoming 50th anniversary of Roots the book and miniseries in 2026 and 2027, Bill Haley, Jr. is drawing upon his twelve years of experience creating memorable experiences for families as a cast member at Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California to fulfill his generational assignment as co-founder of a newly formed nonprofit, The Inherited Roots Project to honor and share the legacy and impact of his grandfather Alex Haley’s literary contributions. And most importantly, to inspire the African diaspora, and generations of people young and old from every corner of the globe to explore, discover, and embrace the ancestral connections back to their homeland.. their ROOTS.

This Week's Special Guest is Loida Lewis. Lewis was born and raised in Sorsogon City, Sorsogon, the daughter of Francisco Nicolas and Magdalena Mañalac. Her sister, Imelda, was the former Lead Convenor of the National Anti-Poverty Commission during the administration of Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and Chairperson of the Commission on Filipinos Overseas during the administration of Benigno Aquino III.

She earned her B.A. in humanities (cum laude) from St. Theresa's College Manila, and her Bachelor of Laws (LL. B.) from the University of the Philippines - Diliman. She placed 7th in her UP class 1967, passed the Bar Exams, and was admitted to practice in the Philippines in 1968.

In 1974, she became the first Asian woman to pass the New York State Bar without studying in a US Law School, making her eligible to practice law in both the Philippines and in the United States.

Lewis began to work for the Law Students Civil Research Council in New York, Manhattan Legal Services and when she passed the New York Law Bar, she worked as an associate with Antonio Martinez Law Office on immigration cases. When she won her discrimination case against the Federal Government, she finally worked as an attorney for the Immigration and Naturalization Service from 1978 until 1988. Lewis has had a major impact as an immigration lawyer, particularly when it comes to the rights of Filipino immigrants living in America. She co-wrote the book "How to Get a Green Card" with Ilona Bray JD, 12th Edition, published by NOLO.[1]

Nicolas-Lewis met her husband-to-be Reginald F. Lewis on a blind date in New York City in 1968 and were then married a year later. It was in December 1987 when her husband Reginald acquired Beatrice International in a $985 million leveraged buyout, creating the largest African American-owned company in the United States. Reginald died from brain cancer in 1993. Lewis served as an informal adviser and confidant to her late husband. After a year of mourning, Loida N. Lewis served as CEO and Chair of TLC Beatrice International, the multinational food company that her husband entrusted to her. In an article written by Coco Marett entitled "How Loida Got Her Groove Back," the author states: "But despite her position and her wealth following her takeover of TLC Beatrice, Lewis remained far from flamboyant. In fact, the humble businesswoman's first move was to sell the company jet and limousines, and move her office from its top floor luxury suite in Manhattan to a more humble and inconspicuous space." This allowed her to maximize the profits of her late husband's company, which she sold in 1999.[2][citation needed]

Lewis is Chair and CEO of TLC Beatrice, LLC, a family investment firm.[3]

In March 2023, Lewis published her memoir, "Why Should Guys Have All The Fun? An Asian American Story of Love, Marriage, Motherhood, and Running a Billion Dollar Empire" — a take off from her husband's best-selling autobiography, "Why Should White Guys Have All The Fun?" posthumously published in 1995. Her memoir was also published in digital and Audible format. In 2024, she launched The Loida Lewis Podcast.
