Rest in Peace Mrs. Merline Herbert; founder of the Creole Lunch House, on 12th Street in Lafayette. She touched the lives and filled many with good creole food served with love and laughter. She will be missed.

Today, we honor the life and legacy of Mrs. Merline Herbert; founder of the beloved Creole Lunch House, culture bearer, and community matriarch.

Mrs. Merline was the epitome of a Creole woman! She was gracious, generous, and strong in spirit. With every warm smile, every word of encouragement, and every stuffed bread she lovingly served, she nurtured more than appetites, she fed the soul of a state.

Her hands built more than a restaurant, they helped shape a culture and community. Her food told our stories. Her presence lifted our people. And her legacy deserves more than memory; it deserves acknowledgment from the very institutions she helped to enrich and build: from the city of Lafayette to the halls of the Department of Tourism, from Jazz Fest to the great State of Louisiana.

May her name never be forgotten. May her spirit forever season the air of SWLA!

Rest well, Queen Merline.
You fed us all in more ways than one. Now it’s up to us all to make sure they never forget.
