My most frequently purchased white wines 🥂

Recently my friend asked me to help her select budget friendly whites and these three were at the top of my mind.

Kono Sauvignon Blanc, Marlborough NZ $13
If you like your Sauvy B on the more herbaceous side, you will love this one! Crisp and crushable with notes of lemongrass and lime.

Espiral Vinho Verde, Portugal $5
Slightly effervescent with green apple and stone fruit, this is one of my favorite beach wines. Pairs perfectly with seafood! Also… it’s $5.

La Burgondie Crémant de Bourgogne, France $11

If you haven’t heard yet, Crémant is Champagne on a beer budget. These French sparkling wines are made in the same method as Champagne and often with the same grapes, so they have similar notes like pastries, berries, and apples! This one is giving apple pie and I’m here for it.

When someone calls sparkling wine Champagne, but it is not from Champagne 🍾 💀

This phrase is frequently used but rarely understood. It also turns people off of sparkling wine because it sounds pretentious!

Basically, sparkling wine is a carbonated wine. I’m talking about bubbles, people. There are many different styles of sparkling wine from all over the world: Champagne, Crémant, Cava, Prosecco, Lambrusco, Sekt, Pet Nat and more. The main distinctions to understand are 1) where the wine is made- regional laws can dictate how it is named and 2) what process is used to get those bubbles.

Champagne can only come from the Champagne region of France and is made using the traditional method, where the second fermentation (bubble making process) happens inside the bottle! Other sparkling wines can be made using the traditional method, but if it’s not happening in Champagne, it cannot be called Champagne.

The details on how Champagne is made is incredible and honestly humbling. Once you understand the traditional and care that goes into this wine, you will agree they can be precious about what it is called! Check out our past podcast episode on Champagne for a deeper dive

Finally went wine tasting around Charlottesville, VA 🍷

Virginia is doing amazing things with Viognier and Cab Franc, both of which stole the show at our tastings.

has a stunning showroom, and their skin contact Viognier (orange wine) was a delightful surprise!

had a Cab Franc that was reminiscent of the CFs of the Loire. It was my favorite expression of a Virginia Cab Franc I’ve ever had.
