December is a Crucial Time to Maintain Your Garden. Listed Below Are Five Tips to Keep Your Garden Alive for the Spring Season.

1. Protect & Winterize Plants

Check the garden for winter protection. Protect your garden with a thick layer of: organic mulch, straw, shredded leaves, wood chips, etc.

2. Sow & Root Hardy Crops

Fruit Trees: Blackberries, Raspberries, roses, garlic cloves,
Vegetables: Spinach, kale, radishes, shallots, lettuce, onions
Flowers: Violas, Pansies, Coreopsis, Yarrow, Black-Eyed Susan, Columbine.

3. Clean and store power towels for winter

Sharpen tools and clean rusty tools with oil and sand in a bucket. Store over winter.

4. Prune & Plant

Pruning white dormant encourages vigorous growth and a better structure when spring arrives. Focus on removing dead, damaged, diseased, and cross-branching to improve air circulation and sunlight pe*******on.

5. Prepare For Spring Garden Beds

Use this time to prepare your soil for the busy spring season.
Turn, aerate and layer compost pile/bin.

As November arrives, the garden calls for winter preparation, setting the stage for another spring bloom. Here are five essential garden tips for the month.

1. Clean & Clear
Remove: Spent Annuals & Vegetables

Don’t Remove: Leaves, Seed Heads of Perennials (Coneflowers, Black-Eyed Susan, Ornamental Grasses)

These provide crucial food for birds throughout the winter.

2. Spring Bulbs & Vegetables
November is the last call for planting your spring bulbs
Onions and Garlic

3. Protect & Insulate
Mulch, apply 2-3” layers of shredded leaves, pine needles, and or bark over your garden beds. This insulates the soil and protects plant roots from extreme temperatures.

4. Divide and Prune
Trim back any dead or spent flowers and divide overgrown perennials for garden space.

5. Tool Maintenance
Clean, store, and sharpen garden tools, seal them with oil and let them dry. Finally Drain water hose.

Narcissus, also known as “Daffodils” are one of the first & best flowers to bloom before any other flower. Kicking off the beginning of an early spring season.

Unlike other flowers, daffodils are tubers/bulbs. Most bulbs are planted in the fall season from September to October (Zone 8a), 4-6 weeks prior to the first frost.

To plant daffodils, dig 4-8 inches deep. It’s best to plant these behind any summer perennials / annual plants as they tend to fade during the summer. Furthermore, daffodils are deer-resistant.

6 Generations Has Occupied Nellie’s & Toney’s Estate Since They First Built The House.

Nellie and Toney Strayhorn were the first known African-Americans to settle in what is now Carrboro, NC. Both were born into slavery. They purchased approximately 30 acres in 1879 and built a log cabin and a small farm which still stands today.
