Two years removed from our Appalachian Trail thru-hikes. Boxer Mom and I summited Mt. Katahdin on July 22, 2023 ending one dream….but awakening us to a world full of many others. We had to celebrate and reminisce by meeting up for a quick little day hike at Dawson Forest WMA. Happy ‘Trailversary’ to us. Keep calm and hike on.

What was supposed to be one trip over 2.5 days turned out to be two trips for 2.5 days of great, hot, humid, tick-infested, night-time lightning storm praying, relentless PUDS on a ‘flat’ hike according to the topo map, blow-down scrambling, 46ish miles of type 2 fun….one trip solo, the next with CJ Bradbury.

In true hiker trash fashion, we made good use of a day-use area pavilion by catching some nighttime zzzz’s before being picked up by shuttle driver Taz who dropped us off up trail to hike back to my truck. My first trip was last week for a 27 mile day and a half solo hike. Because of a parking lot snafu, I had to head back over this week to finish up the remaining 20ish miles. Lucky for me, I’ve got a buddy at REI that doesn’t take much convincing to head out in summertime conditions….and our work schedules worked out perfect for us to team up for a 20+ mile day hike to finish the Chattooga River Trail.

Parts of the Chattooga River Trail share tread way with the Foothills Trail in SC and the Bartram Trail which extends from GA into NC. Guess I’ll have to finish those trails now. Hope to see y’all up the trail. Keep calm and hike on!

A hike that started on 3/4/23 ended on 7/22/23. The question is asked of thru-hikers, “Did the trail change you, or did it reveal what you already were?” My answer is a resounding YES! Although my hike was a successful completion of the Appalachian Trail, the journey never ends. There is nothing like the blood, sweat, and tears that one sheds while on a backpacking trip. My body aches to crush miles and to sleep under stars. My mind never stops planning on where to take my next trip, even if I’m already on one. Its so exciting to see this years hikers hitting trail for the adventures of their lifetimes. See y’all up the trail. Keep calm and hike on folks!

I got away January 6th-8th to continue my section hike of the Benton MacKaye Trail. This section was a 42 mile segment from Pheasant Fields Picnic Area near Tellico Plains, TN to Lakeshore Trail Parking Area at Fontana Dam at the beginning of the Great Smokey Mountains National Park, leaving me roughly 92 miles left to finish up. I met up with Girl Scout, whom y’all have met from previous posts from this summer and from my Appalachian Trail pictures and videos. It was a great hike full of laughter, tough mountains, a bit of snow, very cold and wet weather, a hostel stay, and memories. Hope y’all enjoy a peek into our trip. Keep calm and hike on. Dr. Pepper

We weren’t alone this morning at Pine Mountain. I met some trail buddies at 6:45 this morning for a sunrise hike, and we were joined by this group of strangers. After exchanging well wishes, my buddies and I were off to finish our 5.25 mile jaunt. Hope and pray you all have a 2025 full of health, wealth, and wisdom. Keep calm and hike on folks.

Early to bed and early to rise….hiker midnight is a term hikers use to signify an earlier bedtime than normal, usually 9:00pm, but after hiking 20+ miles a day, it’s a struggle to stay awake past 8:00pm.

Those earlier bedtimes help me to hit trail an hour before sunrise, where my headlamp lights up only the path before me. I love the quietness and stillness of this time spent on the trail.

Hope you enjoy a few of these ‘lit’ pictures.
