Hello trillium! When these unique little flowers make their early spring debut, I don’t pick them so that when they go to seed, they spread further into my redwood forested yard. Not many flowers thrive underneath the deep redwood canopy. And so when a native flower springs fourth, in my yard, it’s a lovely pop color against all of that beautiful verdant green.

This little guy makes me think of a critter from a series of books by Jeff Wheeler, who found its inspiration in old Celtic folklore. The critter was a puka (also see pooka, puca, and phouka). A mischievous, and yet faithful companion to the main character. Always there to give a ride out of a bad situation… but the ride would scare the beans 🫘 out of the rider 😂 In Celtic folklore, the puka was feared, for it was a mischievous shapeshifter with dubious intentions🤔. It could bring either good fortune, or bad… depending on its mood. Thought to be a goblin animal spirit, it could appear as a horse, bat, cat, goat, donkey, bull, or a hare, but always with jet black fur. It’s was said one of its favorite nasty tricks was to entice a person (usually a person who’s had a few 🍺)onto its back and then take them on a wild and terrible romp through the wilderness. A kindly puka was thought to help farmers protect their crops and herds.
