โฆ an Ell Rule (or ellwand). Until the early 20th century, the ell rule was a common measure for cloth in Europe. However, standard lengths varied. The Dutch version, pictured at top was 24.75 inches, while the German version pictured Wednesday and at bottom today was 22 inches. The English version, middle, was officially 1.25 yards (45 inches). The original understanding was that an โellโ was a cubit, the length from elbow to middle finger. The Germanic word literally means elbow. (Middle and bottom images from the UK Science Museum Group)
