Coach G.A. Moore, legendary Celina & Pilot Point coach, passed away today. He was 86 years old.

Born in Mustang, Texas, in 1938, where he lived his entire life, Moore won more than 400 Texas high school football games and eight state championships.

Moore retired as Texas’ winning high school coach (429-97-9), and currently sits at second place on that list.

In high school at Pilot Point, Moore played four sports, lettering 16 times. He married his high school sweetheart, Lois Ann. They began dating in college, and celebrated over 60 years of marriage together.

He played football on scholarship at North Texas State University, and graduated in 1962 with a Bachelor’s of Science degree. He earned his Masters from NTSU in 1967.

Moore’s legendary coaching career started in 1962 at Bryson High School, and went 5-5 his first season. He came back to Pilot Point the next year as head coach. He took a few years off from coaching, then returned in 1972 as head coach at Celina High School.

Moore built a 52-5-2 record over the first five years, then led the Bobcats to a State Championship in 1974.

In 1977, Moore returned home to Pilot Point where he led his alma mater to back-to-back state championships in 1980 and 1981.

He remained head coach at PPHS until 1986 when he accepted the job at Sherman High School. They went from 0-10 before Moore to a record of 6-4. At year’s end, Moore was named the Dallas Area Coach of the Year.

Moore then returned to Celina, where he coached for 14 years. In his first season, the Bobcats advanced to the state semifinals. Moore went 163-22 during that stretch, and captured five state championships, including four consecutive. The Bobcats also amassed a 57-game winning streak.

In 2002, Moore was called back to Pilot Point, serving as head coach for three more seasons.

He took a 3-year sabbatical, and in 2009 became head coach at nearby Aubrey, where he officially retired.

Moore was inducted into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame in 2012.

Pilot Point ISD recognized Coach Moore on November 7, 2024 for his contributions to the community by naming the field at Massey Stadium GA Moore Jr field.

Since we were the first to bring this issue to you back in 2020, I wanted to close it out with some final thoughts.

As some of you know Shea Scott won his lawsuit against the City of Celina this week. I will also post some links below for anyone who wants the backstory or to refresh since it has been 5 years!
