This was my first why choose romance, so naturally I approached it with curiosity and several questions.

❤️ Found family
❤️ Protective best friends
❤️ Emotional damage
❤️ People who desperately need hugs and therapy
❤️ Enough drama to keep the pages turning

Despite some heavy themes, this was a quick read that kept me invested and helped pull me out of a reading slump. This was my first Carrie Ward book, and now I’m curious to check out more from her.

I'm still deciding whether why choose romance is officially my thing, but I can definitely see the appeal. Apparently one fictional man wasn't enough and now I understand why some of you have spreadsheets.

If you enjoy protective romance, found family, and characters fighting for their happily ever after, this one just might be for you.

Please check the trigger warnings. The characters already have enough problems without surprise trauma joining the party.

Sarah Pekkanen could announce she's writing a grocery list and I'd probably request it.

✨ Missing women.
✨ Questionable scientific experiments.
✨ A house frozen in time.
✨ Secrets that have been sitting around for sixty years waiting to ruin everyone's lives.

Basically, if you tell me there are mysterious disappearances, dual timelines, and people making terrible decisions while pretending everything is perfectly normal, I'm in.

The 1960s storyline with its martinis and parapsychology experiments completely hooked me, and I loved slowly uncovering what happened to the women who vanished decades earlier.

Also, Saskia Maarleveld remains one of those narrators who could probably read appliance manuals and somehow make them compelling.

Another twisty, atmospheric winner from one of my favorite thriller authors.

🏚️ Creepy house with terrible vibes
🔪 Twists on twists
🚩 People behaving in deeply disturbing ways
🚪 The kind of secrets that should have stayed buried but absolutely won't

Every time I thought I had this one figured out, Lisa Jewell sent me in a completely different direction.

What disturbed me most wasn't anything supernatural. It was the secrets hidden behind closed doors and the reminder that humans are perfectly capable of terrifying each other all on their own.

Dark, twisty, unsettling, and impossible to put down.

STOP SCROLLING. READ THIS INSTEAD.

Since it's Pride Month, I'm recommending one of the most unforgettable books I've ever read.

The Heart's Invisible Furies follows Cyril Avery through decades of searching for where he belongs in a world that often tells him he doesn't.

It's funny, heartbreaking, hopeful, infuriating, and beautifully written. I laughed. I cried. I got emotionally attached to fictional people and suffered accordingly.

Some books entertain you for a few days.

Some books move into your brain and refuse to pay rent.

This one is still living there years later.

If you haven't read it yet, please fix that.

You know how some people respond to public humiliation by hiding under a blanket and avoiding eye contact for six months?

The Lowe family looked at a political s*x scandal and said, "What if we monetized this?"

When Lili Lowe's affair with her married politician boss becomes front-page news, her former talent-agent mother sees opportunity instead of disaster, and suddenly the entire family is along for the ride.

✔️ Messy family dynamics
✔️ Sisters with opinions and issues of their own
✔️ Rich people and politicians making questionable choices
✔️ Media circus chaos
✔️ Sharp commentary wrapped in a very readable story

This felt like watching a PR crisis, reality show, and family drama all collide in the most entertaining way possible. Everyone is flawed. Everyone is making decisions. Some of those decisions are terrible. Naturally, I couldn't stop listening.

If you enjoy stories about scandal, fame, complicated families, and women refusing to stay quietly in the boxes society builds for them, add this one to your list.

A broke author, a rundown beach house, a mysterious watcher, rich people behaving badly, and enough suspicious characters to make me accuse basically everyone.

So yes, perfect summer listening.

✔️ beachy suspense
✔️ story within a story
✔️ found family
✔️ rich people with secrets
✔️ multicast narration

I loved the layered mystery, the story-within-a-story setup, and the found family thread woven through all the chaos. The Beastie Boys reference also made my Gen X heart weirdly happy, because apparently that is all it takes.

The multicast narration worked really well and kept the story feeling twisty, gossipy, and full of “wait, is it them?” moments.

A fun summer suspense listen for anyone who likes their beach reads with secrets, shady people, and absolutely no one minding their own business.

May Reading Wrap Up

In May I read 22 books, which feels both impressive and a little concerning.

This month had a little bit of everything:
✔️ dark romance
✔️ thrillers
✔️ sports romance
✔️ rich people behaving badly
✔️ book club reads
✔️ ARCs, ALCs, and poor decision-making

Basically, if there was chaos, tension, banter, soccer, murder, hockey, rich people behaving badly, mafia men, or emotionally unstable people making terrible choices, I was in.

May’s reading gave me genre whiplash, because apparently I like to keep everyone guessing about what I’ll read next. Mostly myself.

STOP SCROLLING… because the title alone is suspicious

You know those books where you trust no one
and somehow keep changing your mind every five pages??

yeah. that.

✨ secrets on secrets
✨ twists that make you go “wait… WHAT?”
✨ tradwife vibes… but something is OFF

this is one of those fast, addictive reads where you tell yourself one more chapter
and suddenly it’s way too late and you’re running on caffeine and poor decisions

messy. dramatic. a little chaotic. exactly what I want in a thriller

if you love a book that keeps you guessing and slightly unhinged, add this to your TBR

*Bookish Babe Brigade Book Club Pick*

This was a slow burn, but the banter made it worth the wait.

✔️ sharp banter
✔️ slow burn romance
✔️ fantasy vibes
✔️ tension that actually builds
✔️ “please just admit you like each other” energy

I loved the back-and-forth between these characters. The romance definitely takes its time, but the banter kept me hooked while I waited for everyone to emotionally get themselves together. As one does.

By the time things finally started happening, I was fully in. The tension was fun, the slow burn paid off, and I did not throw my Kindle into the nearest body of water, which feels like personal growth.

Can’t wait to discuss this one with the Bookish Babe Brigade next week.

I See You’ve Called In Dead

This month’s book club pick was corporate burnout, grief, and one deeply unwell man making choices that felt… honestly, a little too relatable. Which is not great news for any of us.

✔️ workplace satire
✔️ dark humor
✔️ grief, but make it weird
✔️ main character spiraling
✔️ capitalism being deeply annoying
✔️ several “haha… wait, am I okay?” moments

This was funny, uncomfortable, and much more thoughtful than I expected from a book with this title. It made me laugh, cringe, and briefly consider whether calling in dead is really that unreasonable. Healthy? No. Understandable? Unfortunately.

A really solid book club pick because there’s plenty to discuss, especially grief, work, burnout, and why being a person is so incredibly inconvenient.
