American mahjong joker rules come down to the group and the timing.

Singles and pairs need natural tiles, and a joker exchange happens during your turn.

The detail worth keeping: if an exchanged joker completes mahjong, that win counts as self-picked, even after a legal call and completed exposure.

East, 1 Crak and 4 Crak were my first Charleston pass - and the decision started with what I wanted to KEEP.

The Bams and Dots gave me a few consecutive run possibilities, and I had nines in all three suits. I wanted to give those options a little more time to develop!

East didn’t have another wind to work with, and the 1 Crak and 4 Crak weren’t connecting with the groupings I wanted to protect. Those became my three to pass while I waited to see what the Charleston brought me.

Halfway through the card year feels like a good time to pull out that Card Challenge tracker again. 💙

Maybe you’ve found a few new favorites. Maybe you downloaded it, played for a while, and haven’t looked at it lately. Or maybe this is the first you’re hearing about it. I’d love for you to join us from wherever you are.

Imagine this is your starting rack and you’re choosing your first Charleston pass. You have a pair of 2 Craks, a pair of 4 Dots, and a little 1–2–3 Bam run to consider.
